Fattoria Le Pupille, Toscana Poggio Valente 2021

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Poggio Valente 2021 is an elegant and structured Tuscan red from the Maremma, showcasing the estate’s deep connection with Sangiovese. Named after the vineyard’s hillside setting, the wine combines refined fruit, Mediterranean character and well-integrated tannins, reflecting the pioneering spirit of one of southern Tuscany’s most respected producers.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour. On the nose, aromas of mature Marasca cherries gradually give way to notes of Mediterranean woodland, herbs and subtle earthy nuances. The palate is elegant yet firmly structured, with concentrated red fruit, savoury depth and a long, persistent finish. Its tannins are polished and well integrated, giving the wine a balanced, harmonious character. Poggio Valente is approachable with decanting, but its structure and concentration allow it to develop further in bottle. Stored under suitable conditions, the 2021 vintage should gain additional complexity over the next several years, with the fruit evolving towards more pronounced savoury, herbal and earthy notes.

Production
Produced in Maremma, in southern Tuscany, Poggio Valente reflects the region’s warm Mediterranean climate and varied hillside terroir. The wine is made primarily from Sangiovese, the signature red grape of the estate, and is fermented at 26°C in stainless-steel tanks. A long 25-day maceration on the skins provides colour, flavour and structure, followed by maturation in 500- and 600-litre oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop richness while preserving its freshness and elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for refined, generously flavoured dishes, particularly roasted or grilled red meat, Tuscan-style beef, lamb and game. It also works well with braised dishes, wild boar and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 30–60 minutes when serving young to help open the aromas and soften the structured palate.

Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is a true pioneer of Maremma’s modern wine movement. The name refers to two farm estates positioned on the highest points of two hills, symbolically regarded as the “eyes” watching over the medieval village of Pereta. Under the direction of Elisabetta Geppetti, the family estate has developed into an innovative and highly regarded winery with around 75 hectares of vineyards spread across Maremma. Its first Saffredi was released in 1987, helping establish the region’s reputation for ambitious, high-quality red wines both in Italy and internationally.
