Description
Fattoria Le Pupille’s Poggio Valente 2020 is an elegant, structured red from Maremma in southern Tuscany, where Sangiovese expresses both Mediterranean warmth and refined freshness. Named after the estate’s hilltop farms—seen as the “pupils,” or eyes, watching over the medieval village of Pereta—it reflects the pioneering spirit that has made Le Pupille one of the region’s most respected producers.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with an inviting ruby-red colour, showing depth and youthful energy. On the nose, aromas of mature Marasca cherries gradually give way to notes of Mediterranean scrub, herbs and warm woodland. The palate is elegant and well defined, combining ripe fruit with a firm yet polished structure. Well-integrated tannins provide balance and length, leaving a persistent, harmonious finish.
Poggio Valente is approachable with some aeration, but its structure and concentration give it excellent cellaring potential. It should develop added savoury complexity and softer tannins over the coming years, with the best drinking window likely extending well into the next decade when properly stored.
Production
The wine comes from Fattoria Le Pupille’s mosaic of vineyards in Maremma, where the warm coastal Mediterranean climate and varied hillside sites help produce ripe yet balanced red wines. Sangiovese is central to the estate’s identity and dominates its vineyards. Fermentation takes place at 26°C in stainless-steel tanks, followed by an extended 25-day maceration on the skins. The wine is then matured in larger 500- and 600-litre barrels, allowing the fruit and structure to integrate without overwhelming the wine’s character.
Food & Serving
Its polished tannins and savoury Mediterranean profile make Poggio Valente an excellent partner for refined meat dishes, grilled or roasted beef, lamb, and game such as venison or wild boar. It also suits hearty Tuscan preparations and mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for approximately 30–60 minutes before serving, particularly in its youth, to open the aromas and soften the structured palate.
Producer
Founded in Maremma and developed under the direction of Elisabetta Geppetti, Fattoria Le Pupille is regarded as a true pioneer of southern Tuscany’s modern wine movement. The estate now encompasses approximately 75 hectares of vineyards spread across the region’s distinctive hills and valleys, with Sangiovese at the heart of its production. Its first Saffredi was released in 1987 and helped place Maremma on the international fine-wine map. Today, the estate is recognised for combining the identity of traditional Tuscan varieties with ambitious, polished winemaking.
