Fattoria Le Pupille, Toscana Poggio Valente 2019

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Poggio Valente 2019 is an elegant and structured red from Maremma in southern Tuscany, where Sangiovese expresses both Mediterranean warmth and refined freshness. Named after the estate’s hillside vineyards overlooking the medieval village of Pereta, it reflects the pioneering spirit of one of the region’s most respected producers.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with an inviting ruby-red colour and aromas of mature Marasca cherries, followed by nuances of Mediterranean scrub and woodland. On the palate, it is poised and persistent, combining elegant fruit with a firm yet polished structure. The tannins are well integrated, giving the wine balance and a long, satisfying finish. With its concentration, structure and refined tannins, Poggio Valente 2019 has the depth to develop further in bottle over the coming years. It is already approachable with decanting, but will reward careful cellaring.

Production
Produced primarily from Sangiovese, the grape considered the soul of Fattoria Le Pupille, Poggio Valente comes from the estate’s vineyards in Maremma, a Mediterranean-influenced area of southern Tuscany. Fermentation takes place at 26°C in stainless-steel tanks, followed by a 25-day maceration on the skins. The wine is then matured in 500- and 600-litre oak casks, allowing its fruit, structure and aromatic complexity to develop without overwhelming the character of the wine.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for refined, carefully prepared meat dishes, including grilled or roasted beef, braised meats and Tuscan specialities. It also works particularly well with game such as wild boar or venison. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for 30–60 minutes to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften.

Founded in the heart of Maremma, Fattoria Le Pupille is a genuine pioneer of the region’s red-wine movement. The estate takes its name from the two farmhouses on hilltops above Pereta, said to resemble the eyes watching over the medieval village. Under the leadership of Elisabetta Geppetti, the family estate has developed into a modern, forward-looking winery with around 75 hectares of vineyards. Its 1987 launch of Saffredi helped place Maremma on the international wine map, while Sangiovese remains central to the estate’s identity and its celebrated Morellino wines.
