Description
Fattoria Le Pupille’s Toscana Pelofino 2023 is a fresh, approachable red from Maremma in southern Tuscany, combining generous red-fruit character with a soft, well-defined structure. Its name refers to the two hilltop farms overlooking the medieval village of Pereta—like the “pupille,” or pupils, of two watchful eyes. A fine introduction to the estate’s pioneering role in the modern wines of Maremma.
Tasting Notes
Bright and youthful in appearance, the wine opens with inviting aromas of red berries and a subtle touch of cassis, followed by gently spicy nuances as it develops in the glass. On the palate, it is fruity, smooth and pleasantly rounded, with balanced structure and an easy-drinking freshness.
Pelofino is best enjoyed in its youth, when its lively fruit and soft texture are at their most expressive. It does not require extended cellaring, although a short period of bottle age should allow its spicy notes and overall harmony to develop further.
Production
Produced in the warm coastal-influenced landscape of Maremma, Toscana Pelofino reflects Fattoria Le Pupille’s focus on expressive Tuscan red wines. Fermentation takes place at 24°C in stainless-steel tanks, followed by 15 days of maceration on the skins. The wine then matures for five months in stainless-steel vessels, preserving its fresh fruit profile and supple character. Specific harvesting methods and the precise grape blend are not provided.
Food & Serving
A versatile companion to simple appetisers with sauces, Pelofino is particularly well suited to acquacotta, the traditional rustic soup of Maremma, as well as meat-based main courses and a selection of medium-mature cheeses. Serve lightly cool at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not necessary, though opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving can help its fruit and spicy aromas emerge.
Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is a true pioneer of Maremma and has helped establish southern Tuscany as a source of high-quality red wines. Elisabetta Geppetti transformed the family estate into a modern, dynamic winery, which now manages 75 hectares of vineyards spread across Maremma’s diverse landscapes. Sangiovese accounts for around 70% of the estate’s plantings and forms the soul of its renowned Morellino wines. The estate’s reputation grew significantly with the launch of Saffredi in 1987, a landmark wine that brought the quality of the region to the attention of wine lovers well beyond Tuscany.
