Description
Fattoria Le Pupille Poggio Valente 2021 is a pure Sangiovese from coastal Tuscany, crafted in a decidedly refined, almost Burgundian style. Marking the 25th anniversary of this emblematic wine, the 2021 vintage shows impressive fruit concentration, vibrant freshness and an immediately engaging personality. Long regarded as one of the benchmarks for Sangiovese in the warmer Maremma zone, Poggio Valente captures both the sun-drenched richness of the coast and the finesse associated with Tuscany’s great reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Poggio Valente presents a luminous, medium ruby-red color with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose opens with vivid notes of red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, followed by iris, violet and blue flowers, hints of dried herbs and a gentle earthy undertone. Subtle touches of sweet spice and cedar from the large oak casks stay firmly in the background, framing the fruit without overpowering it.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with juicy red fruit at its core and a line of mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything bright and lifted. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and raspberry are layered with floral notes, dusty earth and a faint hint of tobacco. The tannins are present but fine and powdery, lending structure without harshness. The finish is long, savory and elegant, showing that "bright spot" of freshness that winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti seeks in this warm corner of Tuscany. Enjoyable now with a short decant, the 2021 has the balance and structure to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years.
Production
Poggio Valente comes from a single hillside vineyard in the Maremma area of southern Tuscany, where Sangiovese thrives in sun-exposed slopes with well-drained, mineral-rich soils and maritime breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The warm days and cooler nights help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, with careful selection of clusters to ensure only perfectly ripe Sangiovese is brought to the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks over about 20 days, with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs designed to extract color and flavor without excessive tannin, in line with the estate’s more Burgundian, finesse-driven philosophy. After fermentation, the wine is aged in tonneaux (large oak barrels), of which only about 20% are new, allowing slow oxygen exchange and textural refinement while maintaining the purity of fruit and floral character that define Poggio Valente.
Food & Serving
This elegant Sangiovese pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan cuisine and refined Mediterranean dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with herbs, grilled pork chops, duck breast or game birds, as well as tomato-based pasta, wild mushroom risotto, and aged Pecorino Toscano. It also complements charcuterie and dishes featuring earthy elements like lentils or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. Decant for 45–60 minutes in its youth to soften the powdery tannins and allow the floral and red-fruited bouquet to fully open.
Producer
Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the pioneering estates of the Maremma in southern Tuscany, and its owner, Elisabetta Geppetti, is widely recognized as a driving force behind the region’s rise to international prominence. Starting in the 1980s, she championed the potential of the Morellino di Scansano area, transforming what was once considered a rustic coastal zone into a source of serious, ageworthy reds. Today, Fattoria Le Pupille is known for its expressive Sangiovese-based wines and its flagship Super-Tuscans, consistently earning high critical acclaim. Poggio Valente, celebrating its 25th anniversary in the 2021 vintage, stands as one of the estate’s most important crus and a reference point for elegant, terroir-driven Sangiovese from this warmer corner of Tuscany.
