Description
Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi is one of Maremma’s most recognised fine red wines, combining the generosity of the Tuscan coast with the structure of Bordeaux varieties. Rich, polished and age-worthy, the 2023 vintage offers a compelling balance of ripe fruit, velvety texture and layered spice. Saffredi has become a landmark wine for the estate since its first release in the late 1980s.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of red fruit, redcurrants and blackberries, followed by nuanced notes of clove, cinnamon and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rounded and velvety, with well-integrated structure and a beautifully balanced profile. The finish is long and persistent, allowing its aromatic complexity to unfold gradually, with the spices taking centre stage alongside the ripe fruit.
The 2023 Saffredi is approachable with decanting, yet its concentration, oak maturation and firm underlying structure give it excellent potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years. Properly stored, it should reward cellaring for many years.
Production
Produced in Maremma, Tuscany, Saffredi is a Bordeaux-inspired blend from Fattoria Le Pupille, traditionally based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The grapes are fermented at 26–28°C in stainless-steel tanks, followed by a 15–20-day maceration on the skins to extract colour, flavour and structure. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new, adding depth and subtle notes of spice and chocolate.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, Saffredi is particularly well suited to grilled or roasted red meat, beef stew and game such as venison or wild boar. Its ripe fruit and polished texture also make it an excellent match for dark chocolate desserts. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe; decanting for approximately 1–2 hours is recommended when serving the wine young.
