Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2022

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2022 is one of Maremma’s benchmark red wines—a polished, Bordeaux-inspired blend with the warmth and Mediterranean character of coastal Tuscany. First released in 1987, Saffredi helped establish the region’s reputation for producing internationally acclaimed wines of remarkable depth and finesse.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured, the wine opens with inviting aromas of red fruit, ripe berries and blackberry, followed by layers of clove, cinnamon and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rounded, velvety and beautifully balanced, combining generous fruit with refined structure and a smooth, persistent finish. The long, lingering aftertaste allows the wine’s aromatic complexity to unfold gradually, with spice becoming increasingly prominent. Already approachable with decanting, Saffredi 2022 has the concentration, oak integration and balance to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The grapes are grown in Maremma, southern Tuscany, where the warm Mediterranean climate and varied hillside sites provide ideal conditions for full-bodied yet balanced red wines. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28°C, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration to extract colour, flavour and structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new, lending polished spice and depth while complementing the ripe fruit.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted red meat, game and other rich, hearty dishes, Saffredi also works beautifully with mature cheeses. Its dark-fruit richness and spicy finish make it an especially appealing match for dark chocolate. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully.

Fattoria Le Pupille is a pioneering estate in Maremma, a region closely associated with the production of characterful Tuscan red wines. The estate takes its name from the two farmhouses situated on hilltops above the medieval village of Pereta, said to resemble the eyes—or “pupille”—watching over the village. Under Elisabetta Geppetti’s leadership, the family property has grown into a modern, highly respected estate with around 75 hectares of vineyards spread across Maremma’s diverse landscape. Its Saffredi, first made in 1987, has played a significant role in placing both the estate and the region on the international fine-wine map.
