Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2022

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2022 is one of Maremma’s most celebrated Super Tuscan reds: a powerful yet refined blend shaped by the warm coastal climate of southern Tuscany. First created in 1987, Saffredi has become a landmark wine for the estate, combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and Mediterranean character of Maremma.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with intense violet reflections, the wine opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants and plums, followed by floral notes, sweet spices, cedar and finely integrated balsamic nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with generous fruit, polished tannins and a fresh, savoury finish that brings balance to its richness. The 2022 vintage shows excellent depth and youthful energy. With its firm structure, ripe fruit and well-integrated oak, Saffredi is approachable with decanting but will develop greater complexity over the next 10–15 years when stored in a cool, dark cellar.

Production
The vineyards are located in the hills of Maremma, where warm sunshine, cooling sea breezes and well-drained soils help the grapes achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot, with each variety harvested at optimum maturity. Fermentation and maturation take place with careful attention to preserving both fruit intensity and structure, followed by extended ageing in French oak before bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately one to two hours, especially while the wine is young. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-cooked beef, wild boar ragù and roasted lamb, while mature hard cheeses will also complement its ripe fruit and savoury finish.

Based near Scansano, the estate is known for combining traditional Tuscan identity with a precise, modern approach to vineyard management and winemaking. Saffredi is its flagship red and a defining example of the quality and international reputation the estate has brought to the region.
