Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2020

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2020 is one of Maremma’s landmark red wines: a refined, Bordeaux-inspired blend that helped place this coastal Tuscan region firmly on the international wine map. First released in 1987, Saffredi combines generous Mediterranean fruit with polished structure, silky texture and remarkable aromatic depth.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of red fruit, ripe berries and blackberries, followed by layers of clove, cinnamon, cocoa and dark chocolate. The palate is rounded and velvety, with beautifully balanced fruit, supple tannins and a refined, persistent finish in which the spicy notes gradually take centre stage. Saffredi’s concentration, freshness and well-integrated oak give it excellent ageing potential. It is already approachable in 2020, but should develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years when carefully cellared.

Production
The wine is produced in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, where the warm Mediterranean climate and varied vineyard sites provide ideal conditions for powerful yet elegant red wines. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28°C, followed by 15–20 days of skin maceration to extract colour, flavour and structure. Saffredi is then matured for 18 months, with approximately 75% of the barrels being new oak, adding spice, texture and depth while preserving the wine’s generous fruit character.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come up gradually in the glass. Decanting for around 1–2 hours is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic complexity. It is an excellent match for grilled or roasted red meat, game, rich stews and mature cheeses, and also pairs surprisingly well with dark chocolate.

Fattoria Le Pupille is a pioneering estate in Maremma, southern Tuscany, and is closely associated with the region’s finest red wines. The name refers to the two farmhouses positioned on the hilltops above the medieval village of Pereta, said to resemble the eyes—or “pupils”—watching over the village. Under Elisabetta Geppetti’s leadership, the family estate grew into a modern and influential winery with around 75 hectares of vineyards spread across the Maremma landscape. Its first Saffredi was released in 1987, and the wine’s consistent quality has played a significant role in establishing Maremma as a respected source of premium Italian reds.
