Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2020

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2020 is one of Maremma’s benchmark red wines—a polished, Bordeaux-inspired blend shaped by the warm, maritime character of southern Tuscany. First released in 1987, Saffredi helped establish Maremma as a source of internationally acclaimed, age-worthy reds, combining generous fruit with remarkable refinement.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of red fruit, ripe berries and blackberry, complemented by layers of clove, cinnamon and dark chocolate. The palate is rounded and velvety, with beautifully integrated structure, balanced freshness and a long, persistent finish in which the spicy notes gradually take centre stage. Its combination of ripe fruit, polished tannins and oak complexity makes it enjoyable now with decanting, while the concentration and balance suggest excellent further development in bottle. Stored under suitable conditions, the 2020 vintage should evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.

Production
Produced in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, Saffredi reflects the area’s warm Mediterranean climate and diverse hillside vineyards. The grapes are harvested with care at optimal ripeness before fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28°C. The wine undergoes 15–20 days of skin maceration, followed by 18 months of ageing in oak barrels, 75% of which are new, lending spice, texture and depth while preserving the wine’s generous fruit profile.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C with grilled or roasted red meat, beef fillet, lamb and game, where its supple tannins and ripe fruit can shine. It is also a compelling match for rich, slow-cooked dishes and dark chocolate. Decant for around one to two hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine young, to allow its aromatic complexity to fully unfold.

Producer
Founded in the heart of Maremma, Fattoria Le Pupille is widely regarded as a pioneer of the region’s modern wine movement. The estate takes its name from the two hilltop farms overlooking the medieval village of Pereta, described as the ‘pupils’ or eyes watching over the village. Under Elisabetta Geppetti’s leadership, the family estate grew into a modern, highly respected winery with around 75 hectares of vineyards. Sangiovese remains central to the estate—occupying roughly 70% of its vineyards and defining its Morellino wines—while Saffredi has become its flagship expression and a wine that brought international attention to Maremma.
