Fattoria Le Pupille, Maremma Saffredi 2018

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi 2018 is one of Maremma’s landmark red wines—a polished, Bordeaux-inspired Tuscan expression that helped bring the region international attention. First released in 1987, Saffredi has become the estate’s flagship, combining the warmth of the coastal Maremma with remarkable structure, depth and longevity.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the wine opens with an inviting bouquet of red fruit, ripe berries and blackberry, followed by layers of clove, cinnamon and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is rounded, velvety and beautifully balanced, with supple fruit supported by refined structure and well-integrated oak. The finish is long and persistent, allowing the wine’s aromatic complexity to unfold gradually, with warming spice taking centre stage. Although approachable now with decanting, the concentration and balance of the 2018 vintage suggest excellent cellaring potential over the coming decade or more when stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The grapes are grown in Maremma, southern Tuscany, where Mediterranean influences, sunshine and varied hillside sites create ripe yet balanced red wines. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28°C, followed by 15–20 days of maceration on the skins to extract colour, flavour and structure. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new, adding layers of spice, chocolate and refined toast while preserving the wine’s generous fruit character.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled or roasted red meat, braised beef and game, Saffredi also works beautifully with rich pasta dishes and mature cheeses. Its dark-fruited depth makes it an especially enjoyable match for dark chocolate. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for around one to two hours before serving to reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity and soften its youthful structure.

Producer
Founded in the hills overlooking the medieval village of Pereta, Fattoria Le Pupille is regarded as a true pioneer of Maremma wine. The estate’s name refers to the two hilltop farms that resemble eyes—or “pupille”—watching over the village. Under the leadership of Elisabetta Geppetti, the family estate developed into one of the region’s most respected modern wineries and now covers approximately 75 hectares of vineyards. Saffredi, first produced in 1987, played a significant role in placing Maremma on the fine-wine map of Tuscany and beyond.
