Description
Famille Hugel Alsace Pinot Gris Classic 2023 is a classic expression of Pinot Gris from one of Alsace’s most respected historic houses. Crafted in a fresh, dry style, it combines texture, elegance, and the spicy, subtly smoky character that has long made Alsace Pinot Gris so distinctive.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a pale golden hue with a gentle silver sheen. The nose is expressive yet refined, with notes of ripe pear, yellow plum, citrus peel, white flowers, and a light hint of smoke or spice.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, offering juicy orchard fruit, bright acidity, and a rounded, silky texture. The finish is clean and persistent, with a touch of mineral drive and subtle spice. While approachable young, it can also develop added complexity over the next few years.
Production
Sourced from Alsace vineyards where cool continental conditions and varied soils help preserve freshness while building aromatic depth, this wine reflects the region’s strong terroir identity. Pinot Gris is typically harvested by hand or with careful selection to ensure optimal ripeness, then vinified to emphasize purity, balance, and the grape’s naturally generous texture. The Classic style is made to highlight precision and drinkability, with fermentation and élevage designed to retain freshness and varietal character.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that works especially well with roast chicken, turkey, pork, mushroom dishes, creamy pasta, and Alsatian specialties such as tarte flambée or choucroute. It is best served slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, and does not usually require decanting, though a short aeration can help if served very young.
Producer
Hugel & Fils is one of Alsace’s most iconic family-owned producers, with a history dating back to the 17th century in Riquewihr. Generations of the Hugel family have helped define the region’s reputation for high-quality, terroir-driven wines, and the estate is especially admired for its consistency and commitment to classic Alsatian styles. Today, Hugel remains a benchmark producer with an international following and a long-standing reputation for excellence.
