Tasting Notes
In the glass, Nit de Nin Mas d'En Caçador 2012 shows a deep, intense ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and a decade of graceful evolution. The nose is pure and perfumed, unfolding layers of dark cherry, wild blackberry, and plum, alongside notes of violets, dried rose petals, and Mediterranean herbs. Subtle spice—licorice, pepper, clove—and a distinct, stony minerality add complexity and lift. On the palate, this wine is at once generous and incredibly precise. The Garnacha Peluda brings brightness and high-toned red fruit, while the Cariñena contributes structure, depth, and a dark, savory backbone. Flavors of black cherry, damson, and red currant are wrapped in fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Production
Mas d'En Caçador is a historic, precipitous vineyard above Porrera in Priorat, planted with very old vines rooted in classic llicorella (decomposed slate) at around 500 meters altitude. The poor, rocky soils and steep exposure severely limit yields and concentrate flavor, while the elevation preserves freshness and aromatic finesse in the grapes. The 2012 Nit de Nin Mas d'En Caçador is composed of roughly 60% Garnacha Peluda—a distinct clone known for producing lighter-colored, higher-acid wines than standard Garnacha—and the remainder Cariñena from these ancient vines. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested due to the extreme slope, then sorted meticulously to ensure only perfect clusters are used. Vinification is artisanal and detail-focused, typically involving gentle extraction and fermentations designed to preserve perfume and precision, followed by aging in carefully selected barrels that support, rather than mask, the wine’s striking terroir character. Only about 4,000 bottles were produced, bottled in March 2014.
