Description
Familia Nin-Ortiz Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu 2022 is a striking red from one of Catalonia’s most characterful terroirs, crafted in tiny quantities and already highly acclaimed (97/100 Vinforkæmper). This is a wine that wears its origin proudly: wild, Mediterranean, and intensely expressive. Expect a bottle that feels both artisanal and precise, with the sort of depth and personality that serious Spanish wine lovers seek out.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu 2022 shows a vibrant, deep ruby core with a luminous edge that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is wonderfully distinctive: ripe stone fruits reminiscent of juicy peach meet aromatic Mediterranean herbs, with layers of smoked bacon, ink, and black licorice adding a savory, almost feral complexity. It’s an aromatic profile that is both hedonistic and detailed, clearly shaped by its dramatic hillside origins.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a refined yet wild energy. The tannins are abundant yet finely grained and slightly dusty, giving a tactile frame to the generous fruit. Despite the 14.07% alcohol, the balance is excellent, supported by a fresh line of acidity (pH 3.4; 4.27 g/L total acidity) that keeps the wine lively and mouthwatering. Dark berry and stone-fruit notes are interwoven with savory herbs, smoke, and mineral nuances that linger long on the finish. This cuvée has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining even greater aromatic complexity and polish with time in bottle.
Production
Coma D’En Romeu comes from a singular, steep vineyard site in Catalonia, where poor, stony soils and intense Mediterranean light combine to produce naturally low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Familia Nin-Ortiz farm their vines with great respect for the land, working organically and biodynamically, and harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. In the winery, the philosophy is minimal intervention and precision: gentle extraction preserves the wine’s finesse while allowing its wild, site-driven character to shine, followed by careful élevage and a very limited bottling of just 2,400 bottles in April 2024.
Food & Serving
Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu 2022 is a superb partner for richly flavored Mediterranean cuisine and grilled meats. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder with herbs, ibérico pork, duck breast, game dishes, or charred vegetables with rosemary and thyme; it also works beautifully with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses, and deeply flavored mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended in its youth to let the initially compact nose unfurl and to soften the abundant tannins, revealing all the nuance this vineyard can offer.
Producer
Familia Nin-Ortiz is one of the most respected artisan producers in Catalonia, celebrated for their meticulous work in high-altitude, low-yielding vineyards and their commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. From their rugged, terraced sites, they have helped redefine what premium Spanish mountain wines can be: intense yet finely etched, deeply mineral, and unmistakably linked to place. Over the years, their cuvées have consistently attracted high critical praise and a loyal following among collectors, making each limited release—like Nit de Nin Coma D'En Romeu—particularly sought after for those looking to experience the cutting edge of Catalan fine wine.
