Description
Falkenstein Phileo Pinot Bianco 2018 is a refined, mountain-born white wine from the steep, terraced vineyards of Alto Adige, crafted by Franz Pratzner at Weingut Falkenstein. This Pinot Bianco captures the cool Alpine climate and stony soils of Val Venosta in a wine that is at once precise, mineral and wonderfully drinkable. It’s a bottle that speaks clearly of place, offering depth and character without sacrificing freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Phileo Pinot Bianco shows a pale straw to light lemon color, with brilliant clarity and a slight greenish hue that hints at its freshness. On the nose, it’s clean and lifted, offering notes of crisp green apple, lemon zest and pear, layered with white blossoms, crushed stone and a faint hint of almond and pastry from time on the lees.
The palate is vibrant yet textural, with a core of ripe orchard fruit – apple, pear and a touch of white peach – wrapped in taut, mouthwatering acidity. Saline, stony minerality runs through the mid-palate, giving a firm, sculpted feel, while subtle herbal and nutty nuances add complexity on the long, dry finish. The structure and acidity suggest that, while it’s drinking beautifully now, this vintage can evolve gracefully for another 4–6 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty and tertiary notes with time in bottle.
Production
Falkenstein’s vineyards sit high on the sun-drenched slopes of Val Venosta in Trentino-Alto Adige, where cool Alpine nights and warm days deliver grapes with intense aromatics and vibrant acidity. The Pinot Bianco for Phileo is grown on steep, terraced parcels characterized by slate and quartz-rich soils, which contribute tension and a pronounced mineral edge to the wine. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness from low-yielding vines, ensuring careful selection and concentration. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place with native yeasts in large wooden casks or neutral vessels, followed by aging on the fine lees to build texture and complexity without heavy oak influence. Sulfur use is kept modest and the wine is bottled with an emphasis on purity and transparency of terroir.
Food & Serving
Phileo Pinot Bianco 2018 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with delicate fish and seafood dishes such as trout, sea bass, scallops or prawn risotto. It also shines alongside Alpine-inspired cuisine – think mild cow’s milk cheeses, speck, vegetable tarts, white asparagus, grilled zucchini or herb-roasted chicken. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully express themselves. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe or in the glass will help the wine open up its subtle floral, mineral and nutty nuances.
