Description

Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Bèze Les Ouvrées Rodin 2018 is a rare, collector-level expression of Grand Cru Burgundy and the pure beauty of Pinot Noir. Crafted from a meticulously selected parcel within the legendary Clos de Bèze, this cuvée marries power and finesse with an almost sculptural sense of precision—hence the tribute to Rodin in its name. In a ripe and generous vintage like 2018, it captures the essence of this historic terroir with remarkable depth, elegance, and aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Les Ouvrées Rodin shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and refinement. The bouquet is immediately captivating: layers of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and blackberries unfold alongside notes of rose petals, violet, and subtle forest floor. With air, more complexity emerges—delicate spice, fine cedar, and a whisper of graphite and mineral tension. On the palate, the texture is quintessential Grand Cru Pinot Noir: silk-smooth and velvety, yet supported by a fine-boned structure. Juicy cherry and ripe blackberry dominate the core, framed by hints of red plum, sweet baking spices, and a subtle savory undertone. The tannins are ultra-refined and powdery, giving length and definition without heaviness, while vibrant acidity keeps everything precise and energetic. The finish is long, layered, and hauntingly aromatic, suggesting excellent aging potential. Well-cellared, this wine should continue to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and even more harmony over time.

Production
Sourced from the hallowed Grand Cru vineyard of Chambertin Clos de Bèze in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Les Ouvrées Rodin comes from a specially selected set of rows within the climat, often from older vines rooted in limestone-rich, well-drained soils. This terroir combines a shallow topsoil with a stony subsoil, giving the wine its hallmark tension, minerality, and depth. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted to retain only pristine clusters. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian methods are used: gentle destemming (often with a proportion of whole bunches, depending on vintage), cold maceration to extract aroma and color, followed by a controlled fermentation in open vats. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—typically with a significant proportion of new oak—to build structure and complexity, before bottling with minimal intervention to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru deserves thoughtful pairings and careful service. It shines alongside refined dishes such as roast duck with cherry glaze, pigeon or squab, veal with morel mushrooms, or a simple but perfectly cooked beef tenderloin. Earthy accompaniments—truffle risotto, wild mushroom fricassée, or root vegetable gratin—highlight its subtle savory notes. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy stems to fully express the aromatics. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open up; as it ages, a gentle, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment is sufficient.
