Description
Etienne Calsac Clos des Maladries 2022 is a rare Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagne from a single enclosed vineyard, or clos, in Avize at the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Made exclusively from Chardonnay and bottled as Extra Brut, it combines the precision of Grand Cru chalk soils with the character of a distinctive, highly limited single-vineyard cuvée.
Tasting Notes
The Champagne displays a fine, persistent perlage and a bright, elegant appearance. On the nose, fresh fruit and citrus mingle with pronounced chalky and mineral nuances. The palate is taut, fresh and well balanced, with vibrant Chardonnay purity, a refined texture and a long, harmonious finish. Its structure, freshness and mineral character should allow it to develop gracefully in bottle over the coming years.
Production
The Chardonnay comes from Clos des Maladries, a rare south-facing single vineyard in Avize, where deep chalk soils provide natural freshness and a pronounced mineral identity. The vineyard is worked with horses, reflecting a careful and respectful approach to the land. The must undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation partly in oak barrels and partly in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is neither filtered nor fined, and a second fermentation in bottle according to the traditional method creates its fine mousse and complex character. Extra Brut dosage preserves the wine’s clarity, tension and expressive finish.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C, allowing it to open gradually in the glass. Its citrus freshness and mineral precision make it an excellent match for oysters, shellfish, sashimi, grilled fish and delicate seafood dishes. It also pairs beautifully with creamy goat’s cheese or simply as an aperitif. Decanting is not necessary, although serving it in a white wine glass can reveal more of its texture and aromatic detail.
