Description
Esporão Private Selection 2016 is the flagship expression from one of Portugal’s most respected estates, offering remarkable depth, concentration and structure. Crafted in Alentejo, where hot days, cool nights and volcanic soils shape distinctive wines, it reflects both the region’s character and Esporão’s long winemaking heritage dating back to bronze-age and Roman times.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark garnet color that hints at its power and intensity. The nose is compact and layered, with ripe red berries, dried fruit, tobacco, sweet spice and a subtle toasted note.
On the palate, it is robust and full-bodied, with firm tannins, impressive presence and a long, serious finish. This is a wine built for the cellar, with the structure and balance to age gracefully for many years.
Production
The grapes come from Esporão’s organically farmed estate in Alentejo, a region defined by very hot summer days, cool nights and an unusually cold winter climate for Portugal. Combined with volcanic soils and native varieties, these conditions create wines with originality, ripeness and structure. Esporão works with natural methods in the vineyard and winery, following a thoughtful, low-intervention approach to preserve purity and site expression.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich, flavourful dishes such as beef Wellington, venison steak, pork tenderloin, lamb rack or roast stuffed chicken. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses and fig bread at the end of a meal. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant for about 1-2 hours if possible to let the wine open fully.
Producer
Esporão is one of Portugal’s leading wine producers, with a history that stretches back to the Bronze Age and a property whose borders have changed little over the centuries. The estate gained modern acclaim with the construction of Portugal’s most advanced winery in 1985, followed by a dedicated white-wine cellar in 2002. Today, Esporão is also known for its high-quality olive oil and for welcoming more than 50,000 visitors each year, making it a major reference point in Alentejo and beyond.
