Description
Chapoutier’s Ermitage Ermite Rouge is one of the great names of the Northern Rhône, offered here in magnum format for an especially impressive and cellar-worthy presentation. Sourced from historic Hermitage vineyards and crafted from the estate’s most distinguished Syrah parcels, this 2006 vintage reflects both the grandeur of the appellation and the precision of one of Rhône’s most respected producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet to inky ruby colour, with the concentration and depth expected from top Hermitage. The nose is layered and complex, often unfolding with dark blackberry and black cherry, violet, smoked meat, pepper, olive tapenade, graphite, and subtle cedar and earth nuances. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, with dense dark fruit, savoury mineral tones, firm structure, and finely etched tannins supporting a long, persistent finish.
This is a wine built for patience. While already capable of showing remarkable complexity after extended cellaring, it can continue to evolve gracefully for many more years, developing tertiary notes of leather, truffle, game, and spice as the fruit integrates further.
Production
Ermitage Ermite Rouge is produced from exceptional hillside vineyards on the Hermitage hill in the Northern Rhône, where steep granite and alluvial soils provide the intensity, structure, and mineral tension that define the appellation. The site’s exposure and demanding terrain encourage low yields and small, concentrated berries, while careful hand harvesting helps preserve fruit quality. Vinification is typically carried out with a focus on precision and extraction, followed by élevage that allows the wine’s power and complexity to integrate over time.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, venison, duck breast, braised short ribs, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if drinking young or relatively early in its evolution, as this will help the aromatics open and the structure soften.
Producer
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers, with a long history rooted in Hermitage and a reputation built on terroir-driven wines of exceptional character. The estate has played a major role in elevating the prestige of Northern Rhône appellations, and is widely respected for its commitment to site expression, meticulous vineyard work, and wines that age with remarkable distinction.
