Description

Erbes Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett Feinherb 2024 captures everything enthusiasts love about classic Mosel Riesling: light on its feet, intensely aromatic, and beautifully balanced between sweetness and freshness. Sourced from the iconic Würzgarten vineyard above the village of Ürzig, this off-dry Kabinett offers a vivid snapshot of the 2024 vintage in one of Germany’s most prized river valleys. Its combination of low alcohol, fine fruit and mineral tension makes it both highly drinkable now and quietly serious in the glass. The steep, red-slate slopes of Würzgarten (‘spice garden’) give this wine its signature exotic fruit and herbal-spice character, setting it apart from paler, more citrus-driven Mosel sites. Karl Erbes has been bottling single-vineyard Rieslings here for decades, helping to showcase Würzgarten’s unique personality to drinkers around the world. This is a wine that continues the estate’s tradition of graceful, transparent Kabinetts that speak clearly of place and vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Würzgarten Kabinett Feinherb shows a pale straw to light lemon colour with a faint green shimmer, youthful and brilliantly clear. The nose is immediately expressive: ripe lime, white peach and juicy apricot are layered with notes of green apple, fresh herbs, and a hint of passionfruit. Underneath the fruit runs a fine line of slatey minerality and a subtle floral lift—think white blossom and lemon verbena—with a delicate suggestion of sweet spice that nods to the vineyard’s name. On the palate, this is classic Mosel Kabinett: light-bodied, featherweight yet flavour-packed, with finely judged residual sugar balanced by razor-fresh acidity. The off-dry “feinherb” style shows as a gentle, polished sweetness that softens the edges without ever feeling sticky or heavy. Citrus and stone-fruit flavours—lime zest, tangerine, nectarine—unfold over a mouthwatering, salty-slate backbone, leading to a long, tingling finish. While delicious in its youth for its purity and vibrancy, this 2024 has the structure to develop gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining more honeyed, smoky and herbal complexity with time in bottle.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from the famed Ürziger Würzgarten, a dramatically steep amphitheatre of red volcanic slate and sandstone that overlooks a tight bend in the Mosel River. The iron-rich, warm soils and excellent sun exposure produce Rieslings with a distinctive exotic-spice and tropical nuance, while the river’s moderating influence helps preserve acidity and extend the growing season. Harvest is typically carried out by hand on these precipitous slopes, allowing the team to make careful selections and pick at optimal ripeness for the Kabinett style. In the cellar, Karl Erbes follows a gentle, traditional Mosel approach: whole clusters are softly pressed, the juice is cold-settled and then fermented slowly at controlled cool temperatures, often with ambient or neutral yeasts, to capture aromatic intensity and delicacy. Fermentation is stopped to preserve natural residual sugar in balance with the acidity, and the wine matures on fine lees in stainless steel (and sometimes large neutral fuder) to retain freshness, detail and terroir transparency.

Food & Serving
This off-dry Mosel Riesling is exceptionally versatile at the table. Its vibrant acidity and fine sweetness make it a standout partner for spicy and aromatic cuisines—think Thai curries, Vietnamese dishes, sushi and sashimi, or chili-laced stir-fries. It also pairs beautifully with lighter fare such as freshwater fish, ceviche, shellfish, salads with citrus dressings, roast chicken, and soft-ripened cheeses like brie or young goat’s cheese. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to shine. Decanting is not essential for a young Kabinett, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or using a simple carafe can help the wine unfurl its floral and mineral notes.

Producer
Weingut Karl Erbes is a small, family-run estate based in Lösnich on the Mosel, founded in 1967 by Karl Erbes with a clear focus on the region’s top steep-slope vineyards. Over the decades, the estate has built a strong reputation for pure, classically styled Rieslings from celebrated sites such as Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Treppchen. Now guided by the next generation, the Erbes family continues to champion meticulous vineyard work and restrained, traditional winemaking that lets each parcel’s character speak for itself. Their wines are widely respected among Mosel enthusiasts for their striking balance of intensity and finesse, regularly earning strong notices from German and international critics, and they remain a benchmark for authentic, terroir-driven Kabinett and Spätlese Rieslings.
