Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Via Nuova shows a luminous garnet core with delicate brick reflections at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is strikingly perfumed: rose petals, violet and dried herbs wrap around notes of wild strawberry, sour cherry and raspberry. Subtle hints of cedar, sandalwood, sweet spice and a touch of cinnamon and graphite add an exotic, almost oriental dimension to the bouquet. On the palate, this Barolo is both precise and sensual. Red berry fruit and juicy sour cherry are supported by a taut, refreshing acidity that keeps everything lifted and vibrant. Fine, tightly knit tannins are polished rather than rustic, giving the wine a Burgundian sense of finesse despite its Barolo structure. Layers of spice, mineral tones and a faint balsamic echo carry through a long, persistent finish. While already approachable with generous aeration, the 2020 has the concentration and backbone to evolve beautifully for 12–18 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkier texture over time.

Production
Via Nuova Bio 2020 is sourced from select Nebbiolo parcels in prime Barolo crus, planted on a mosaic of limestone-clay and sandy marl soils that lend both structure and aromatic lift. E. Pira & Figli farms these vineyards organically, with low yields, meticulous canopy management and exclusively manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. Vinification follows a careful, terroir-driven approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by maturation in mainly used French oak barrels (barriques and tonneaux) for around two years, and further bottle aging before release. The result is a Barolo that marries traditional structure with precision and purity.

Food & Serving
This Barolo shines alongside classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with butter and white truffle, brasato al Barolo, and slow-braised beef or veal. It is equally compelling with game birds, lamb, mushroom risotto, and refined vegetarian cuisine featuring roasted root vegetables, porcini, or truffle accents. Aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino are also excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C; decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatic layers and tannins to unfurl, shortening the decanting time as the wine gains age and secondary complexity.

Pira & Figli, led by the trailblazing Chiara Boschis, is one of the benchmark producers in Barolo and a key figure in the region’s evolution toward high-quality, estate-focused wines.
