Description

Emrich-Schönleber’s 2002 Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Eiswein is a rare dessert wine from one of the Nahe’s most distinguished estates. Made from Riesling grapes harvested only after natural frost, this 375 ml bottle combines remarkable sweetness and concentration with the vibrant acidity and mineral character for which the Halenberg vineyard is known. The mature 2002 vintage offers a special opportunity to experience a classic German Eiswein with considerable depth and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous golden colour, reflecting its age and concentration. The nose is intensely perfumed, with ripe peach, apricot and honey complemented by delicate floral tones and a subtle mineral lift. On the palate, it is rich and generously sweet, yet finely balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity. Concentrated stone-fruit flavours lead into a long, elegant finish marked by honeyed notes and distinctive mineral freshness. With its balance and natural acidity, this mature Eiswein can continue to develop in bottle when well stored, although it is already drinking beautifully.

Production
The grapes come from Monzinger Halenberg, a highly regarded Nahe vineyard known for steep, mineral-rich slopes and excellent conditions for producing precise, long-lived Riesling. Eiswein is made from healthy, late-harvested grapes that are left on the vine until temperatures fall below freezing; they must be picked and pressed while frozen. The ice crystals remain behind in the press, concentrating the grape must’s sugars, flavours and acidity before fermentation creates this naturally sweet, intensely concentrated wine.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Eiswein is a luxurious partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and delicate pastries, while its acidity also makes it a compelling match for blue cheese or foie gras. It can be enjoyed without decanting; simply open shortly before serving and pour carefully, particularly if any natural sediment has developed during its long bottle maturation.

Producer
Emrich-Schönleber is a highly respected family estate based in Monzingen in the Nahe, a region celebrated for elegant, mineral-driven Rieslings. The winery’s reputation rests on its meticulous vineyard work and its ability to express the character of sites such as the Monzinger Halenberg with clarity and precision. Its wines are widely regarded among the finest produced in the Nahe, making this mature Eiswein a distinguished example of the estate’s craftsmanship.
