Description
Elio Grasso Ginestra Casa Matè Barolo 2021 is a strikingly pure and expressive Barolo from one of Monforte d’Alba’s most revered crus. This is Nebbiolo in a luminous, transparent style, yet with captivating depth and tension that unfolds with time in the glass. Elegant, structured and finely etched, it is a Barolo that speaks clearly of its origin in the famed Ginestra vineyard. The unique selling point of Casa Matè lies in its combination of power and precision: it delivers intense flavor and aromatic complexity without ever feeling heavy. Balsamic tones, blue and purple fruits, lavender, spice and blood orange create a layered profile that is both seductive and energetic. Historically, Ginestra is one of the benchmark sites for Barolo in Monforte, and Elio Grasso has been instrumental in showcasing its potential for producing ageworthy, terroir-driven wines of real pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ginestra Casa Matè Barolo shows a bright, transparent garnet core with brick-tinged highlights at the rim, classic for young Nebbiolo from a top site. The appearance already hints at both finesse and concentration, with vibrant color intensity yet a crystalline clarity.
The nose opens with enveloping balsamic notes—think resin, bay leaf and a touch of menthol—setting an aromatic framework that remains a persistent theme. As it aerates, layers of blue and purple fruits emerge (wild blueberry, black cherry, damson plum), together with dried rose petals, lavender, sweet spice, blood orange zest and a subtle mineral edge. There is a beautiful interplay between floral lift and darker, more brooding undertones.
On the palate, the wine is refined yet authoritative, with an interplay of ripe fruit, acidity and firm, polished tannins that is quintessential Ginestra. Flavors of macerated cherry, blackberry, violet, anise, tobacco and citrus peel unfold in waves, supported by a vibrant, mouthwatering line of acidity. The tannins are finely grained but substantial, promising significant evolution, while the finish is long, savory and resonant, with lingering notes of spice, balsamic herbs and crushed stone.
Aging potential is excellent: this 2021 is already charming in its youthful energy, but its structure and balance suggest an optimal drinking window opening from around 2028 and extending comfortably for 15–20+ years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Ginestra Casa Matè is sourced from the famed Ginestra cru in Monforte d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most celebrated terroirs. The vineyard sits on steep, well-exposed slopes composed mainly of calcareous clay and marl, with excellent drainage and significant diurnal temperature shifts. This combination yields Nebbiolo of notable intensity, aromatic complexity and firm, ageworthy structure.
Grapes are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Elio Grasso follows a classic, terroir-focused approach: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, color and tannin; fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels; and aging in large oak (traditionally botti or larger-format barrels) to allow slow integration without masking the character of the site. The focus is on preserving purity of fruit, tension and the precise expression of Ginestra’s mineral-rich soils, resulting in a Barolo that is both deeply rooted in tradition and meticulously crafted.
Food & Serving
This Barolo’s structure and aromatic complexity make it a natural partner for rich, savory dishes. Traditional Piedmontese fare such as braised veal shank (ossobuco), brasato al Barolo, tajarin with white truffle, or wild game (venison, hare) highlight its depth and earthy nuances. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Castelmagno or mature Pecorino, as well as mushroom-based dishes and roasted root vegetables.
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the balsamic and floral notes to fully unfold. As the wine matures, a shorter decant of 30–60 minutes will be sufficient to awaken the bouquet and clarify the palate.
