Description

From one of Barolo’s most respected traditionalists, Elio Grasso’s 2020 Ginestra Casa Maté offers a more graceful, streamlined expression of this famed cru. Sourced from the steep Ginestra vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, it balances classic Nebbiolo structure with a surprisingly open, approachable character in its youth. This single-vineyard Barolo has earned a reputation for longevity, yet in 2020 it shows an inviting brightness and precision that make it compelling even early on.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Ginestra Casa Maté Barolo is a luminous garnet with orange-tinged rims, typical of Nebbiolo but with an appealing youthful intensity. The nose opens on vivid wild red berries, tart cranberry and sour cherry, then deepens into notes of potting soil, dried rose petals and hints of anise. A subtle herbal lift recalls Eastern European dill, fresh mint and crushed wild herbs, adding a distinctive, almost savory complexity. On the palate, this vintage is more slender and linear than the denser 2019, emphasizing precision over sheer power. Bright red fruit—pomegranate, wild strawberry and red currant—takes the lead, supported by tones of blood orange, forest floor, tobacco leaf and a whisper of spice. The tannins are fine-grained and granular rather than bulky, giving structure without harshness, while the lively acidity keeps the wine vibrant and mouthwatering. Although more accessible than usual in its youth, the wine has the backbone to develop beautifully over 10–15+ years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with cellar time.

Production
The Ginestra Casa Maté vineyard sits on steep, well-exposed slopes in Monforte d’Alba, one of Barolo’s prime communes, with calcareous-clay and marl soils that naturally limit yields and intensify Nebbiolo’s character. Elio Grasso works with meticulous vineyard care and predominantly hand harvesting, selecting only perfectly ripe bunches to capture both aromatic lift and structural finesse. In the cellar, the estate follows a classic, terroir-driven approach: long macerations to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine to evolve slowly without overt oak influence. The 2020 was vinified to highlight purity and brightness, preserving the vineyard’s distinctive minerality and fragrance.

Food & Serving
This Barolo shines with refined, savory dishes that can match its structure and complexity: think braised veal shank, lamb shanks, truffle risotto, wild mushroom tagliatelle, or roasted game birds. Mature cheeses such as aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Castelmagno or a well-aged Comté also make excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow full aromatic expression. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles will require gentler, shorter decanting primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Elio Grasso is a benchmark family estate in Monforte d’Alba, known for its faithful, vineyard-focused expressions of Barolo. Established in the mid-20th century and elevated to international prominence under Elio Grasso, the winery was one of the early proponents of bottling single-vineyard Barolo, long before it became the norm in the region. Today, the estate’s holdings in crus such as Ginestra and Gavarini Chiniera are regarded as some of the most coveted parcels in the appellation. With a philosophy that marries traditional long fermentations and large neutral oak aging to meticulous vineyard work, Elio Grasso has earned consistent critical acclaim and a reputation for producing Baroli that are both ageworthy and classically elegant.
