Description
Elio Grasso Gavarini Chiniera Barolo 2020 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a powerful yet finely poised expression of Nebbiolo from one of Monforte d’Alba’s most celebrated crus. The warm 2020 vintage has given this wine a slightly richer, more generous fruit profile while preserving the hallmark precision and structure that define Gavarini Chiniera. Offered in magnum, it’s ideal for the cellar, special occasions, or long, lingering dinners where the wine can reveal its many layers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Gavarini Chiniera shows a vibrant, medium garnet color with brick-tinged reflections that hint at Nebbiolo’s classic evolution to come. The nose opens with vivid notes of strawberry tart and red cherry compote, edged by darker nuances of tar, licorice and damp earth. Compared to cooler vintages, the typical floral lift is more discreet here, giving way instead to a deeper, fruit-and-soil-driven aromatic profile.
On the palate, the wine is focused, precise and beautifully balanced, with ripe red berries, blood orange and pomegranate framed by savory undertones of black tea, tobacco leaf and a gentle background spice. The tannins are firm but polished, providing grip without harshness, while a lively, refreshing acidity keeps the wine long and energetic through the finish. The 2020’s warmth brings a certain approachability in its youth, yet this Barolo remains built for the long haul, especially in magnum. Expect an optimal drinking window to open from around 2028 and extend comfortably for two to three decades under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Gavarini Chiniera is a high-altitude, single-vineyard site in Monforte d’Alba, known for its poor, calcareous soils and steep, well-exposed slopes that yield Nebbiolo of remarkable tension and aromatic purity. The vines are tended with meticulous attention, with low yields and careful, largely manual work in the vineyard to ensure perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Harvest is conducted by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture the ideal balance between phenolic ripeness and fresh acidity. In the cellar, Elio Grasso adheres to a traditional yet precise approach: gentle crushing and a long maceration to extract fine-grained tannins and complex aromas, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak botti, which respect the character of the vineyard rather than masking it with overt wood. The magnum format further enhances the wine’s ability to evolve slowly and harmoniously over time.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for hearty, flavorful dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, roasted lamb, or rich game like venison and wild boar. It also shines alongside truffle-infused specialties from Piedmont, porcini risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, and hard alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. For current drinking, especially in its youth, decanting for 1.5 to 3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles will require gentler, shorter decanting mainly to separate sediment.
Producer
Elio Grasso is one of Barolo’s benchmark producers, based in Monforte d’Alba and widely admired for combining traditional winemaking with an almost obsessive focus on vineyard expression. Since the 1970s and 1980s, the Grasso family has championed estate-grown, single-vineyard bottlings such as Gavarini Chiniera and Ginestra Casa Maté, helping to define the modern understanding of Barolo’s crus. Their wines are known for purity, precision and age-worthiness, consistently earning high praise from international critics and collectors alike. Today, Elio Grasso stands as a reference point in the region, producing Barolo that is both classically rooted and exactingly crafted, with each bottle telling the story of its specific hillside and vintage.
