El Sacramento, Tinto 2016

El Sacramento Tinto 2016 is a deeply concentrated Rioja from old vines in Rioja Alavesa, crafted from 92% Tempranillo and 8% Graciano. Sourced from a historic site near Laguardia, this wine reflects the character of one of Rioja’s most respected areas, where old vineyards and careful aging create wines of real depth and elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the kind of intensity you expect from a top Rioja: dense, polished, and full of colour. The nose opens with blackcurrant, spice, a touch of black pepper, and a subtle licorice note, all framed by oak-derived complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, with ripe fruit and mature tannins that give the wine structure without heaviness. The finish is long and velvety, and while it is already expressive, it should also continue to develop beautifully with further cellaring.

Production
El Sacramento comes from more than 50-year-old Tempranillo vines grown near Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, on a geological fault that improves water retention and helps the vines produce small, highly concentrated berries. The fruit is harvested from low-yielding old vineyards and then aged for 18 months in oak barrels, followed by an additional 15 months in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, grilled beef, venison, game birds, or rich tapas such as Iberico ham and mature Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and show its layered aromatics.

El Sacramento is owned by Belgian wine family Etienne Cordonnier, whose connection to wine spans generations. The estate is regarded as one of the standout properties in Rioja Alavesa, a region known for producing some of the finest Rioja wines, and it has built its reputation on old vines, low yields, and classically styled, age-worthy reds.
