El Enemigo, Syrah Viognier 2021 White

El Enemigo Syrah Viognier 2021 is an intriguing Argentine interpretation of a classic Rhône-inspired blend, combining the depth of Syrah with the aromatic lift of Viognier. Made in Mendoza by Alejandro Vigil as part of the renowned Catena wine family’s El Enemigo project, it is distinguished by fermentation with its own native yeasts and 16 months of maturation in century-old oak barrels.

Tasting Notes
Bright and expressive in the glass, this white wine offers a layered bouquet with floral and stone-fruit nuances, complemented by subtle spice and oak-derived complexity. On the palate, it is textured and full-bodied, balancing ripe fruit character with freshness, gentle phenolic grip and a long, savoury finish. The extended ageing in very old barrels gives the wine an unusual depth and a refined, lightly oxidative complexity without overshadowing its fruit and aromatic character. It is enjoyable now with food, while its structure and concentration should allow it to develop further over the next few years when properly stored.

Production
The wine comes from Mendoza, Argentina, a high-altitude region situated east of the Andes and widely regarded as the country’s leading quality-wine area. Alejandro Vigil’s Rhône-inspired approach brings together Syrah and Viognier, with fermentation carried out using the wine’s own native yeasts. It is then matured for 16 months in 100-year-old oak barrels, adding texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s distinctive character.

Food & Serving
A wine of this richness deserves an equally considered meal. Serve it with roasted poultry, grilled or roasted white fish, lobster, creamy seafood dishes, or richly flavoured vegetarian preparations such as roasted squash and mushrooms. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C; decanting is not essential, but 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help reveal its layered aromas and palate texture.
