Description

Bottled in an impressive 1.5L magnum, the 2019 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply intellectual, quietly powerful Napa Valley classic. This is a wine of structure and soul: an intricate wall of fine-grained tannins frames layers of dark fruit, florals and mineral notes that slowly reveal themselves with time in the glass. The magnum format offers an especially graceful, long evolution in the cellar, making this a superb choice for collectors and special occasions. Sourced from one of California’s most storied Cabernet sites, this cuvée stands out for its combination of intensity and finesse: dense yet fresh, muscular yet composed. The historic Eisele Vineyard, cultivated since the 1880s and long revered for its volcanic, gravelly soils, has become a benchmark for site-driven, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon—first under the Araujo family and now under the stewardship of the Artemis Group (owners of Château Latour). The 2019 vintage captures the estate’s hallmark precision and the long, slow ripening of the year with remarkable clarity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep purple-black hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose unfolds gradually and seductively: violet and rose petals lift from the glass, followed by kirsch, boysenberry and cassis, evolving into notes of blackcurrant gelée, pencil shavings, menthol and a refined hint of truffle. Subtle tones of tar, ash, white pepper and volcanic earth underline the wine’s sense of origin and add a distinctly mineral dimension. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied and beautifully composed, with a “brick house” structure built on very firm yet wonderfully ripe, grainy tannins. The black and red fruit is vivid and tightly knit—think blackcurrant, dark cherry and boysenberry—wrapped in a core of graphite, crushed stone and savory earth. Fresh, lively acidity keeps the wine lifted and precise, carrying through to a long, mineral-laced finish that speaks of ash, warm stones and a touch of spice. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will benefit from 5–7 years of further cellaring and should drink beautifully for two decades or more, gaining complexity, silkier texture and additional tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The Eisele Vineyard lies in a sheltered, cobbly, volcanic amphitheater in Napa Valley, where alluvial fans, gravelly riverbed stones and mineral-rich volcanic soils naturally limit vigor and concentrate flavor. The site’s exposure and cooling breezes promote a long, even growing season, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and fully while preserving freshness. The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand in small lots, with careful selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification is gentle and precise: fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with attentive extraction to capture fine tannins and aromatic purity rather than raw power. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it slowly integrates structure, spice and texture without overshadowing the vineyard’s distinctive mineral, floral and dark-fruited character.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, contemplative Cabernet that shines alongside equally refined cuisine. Think roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison or wagyu, as well as dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or black pepper sauces. Aged hard cheeses—such as Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or well-matured cheddar—also make excellent partners, as do simply prepared, high-quality cuts of beef or game. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, particularly from magnum, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the tannins to relax and the aromatic layers of violet, cassis and earthy minerality to fully emerge; older bottles will require a more delicate, shorter decant primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Eisele Vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s most revered single vineyards, with a history of viticulture dating back to the 19th century. Long known under the Araujo Estate label, the site gained cult status for its Cabernet Sauvignons that combined Old World poise with New World clarity and depth. Today, under the ownership of the Artemis Group—also proprietors of Bordeaux’s Château Latour—the estate continues its commitment to meticulous, sustainable farming, with organic and biodynamic practices at the core of its philosophy. Eisele Vineyard is widely regarded as a reference point for site-expressive California Cabernet: a winery whose bottlings are sought after by collectors worldwide and consistently praised for their purity, balance and remarkable longevity.
