Description

Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Auslese 2024 is a benchmark Mosel Riesling from one of the most revered estates in Germany. Sourced from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, this Auslese captures the delicate balance of opulence, purity, and electric acidity that has made these wines some of the most sought-after in the world. In 2024, the estate continues its tradition of crafting lusciously sweet, ageworthy wines that reflect both the unique slate soils of the Saar and the meticulous hand of a great producer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Scharzhofberger Auslese typically shows a pale to medium lemon hue with youthful green reflections, hinting at its freshness and long life ahead. The nose is intensely aromatic yet finely etched, with layers of ripe stone fruit—white peach, apricot, and nectarine—interwoven with lemon zest, floral notes of jasmine and elderflower, and the signature smoky, slate-driven minerality that defines Scharzhofberg. On the palate, expect a beautifully concentrated, mouthfilling sweetness balanced by razor-sharp acidity, giving the wine an almost weightless feel despite its richness. Flavors of candied citrus, honeyed quince, and ripe orchard fruit unfold alongside nuances of herbal tea, crushed slate, and a gentle saline edge. The finish is long, precise, and crystalline, with lingering notes of citrus oil and wet stone. While already captivating in its youth, this Auslese is built for decades of evolution, gradually gaining complexity with notes of dried apricot, beeswax, and subtle petrol as it matures.

Production
The Scharzhofberger vineyard, perched above the Saar River in the Mosel region, is one of Germany’s most storied sites, characterized by steep slopes, cool climate, and weathered Devonian slate that imparts both tension and minerality to the Riesling grapes. Vines here benefit from excellent drainage and reflected sunlight from the river, allowing for slow, even ripening and the development of noble rot (botrytis) in select parcels—essential for great Auslese. Egon Müller practices meticulous, largely manual vineyard work, including hand-harvesting in multiple passes (selective picking) to capture only perfectly ripe and botrytised berries for the Auslese. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in traditional large oak casks or stainless steel with ambient yeasts, followed by careful élevage to preserve purity, aromatic intensity, and a precise balance of sweetness and acidity, without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Auslese pairs beautifully with fine cuisine, particularly dishes that echo its sweet–savory tension. Try it with foie gras terrine, blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, or delicately spiced Asian dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass, or chili, where the wine’s sweetness softens the heat. It is also exceptional with fruit-based desserts like tarte Tatin, lemon tart, or apricot galette, provided they are not excessively sweet. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its precision and aromatic lift. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in the glass rather than aggressive decanting; for mature bottles, a gentle, brief decant can help separate any sediment and allow the bouquet to open.

Producer
Weingut Egon Müller zu Scharzhof is a true icon of German wine and a global reference point for world-class Riesling. Based at the historic Scharzhof estate on the Saar tributary of the Mosel, the Müller family has cultivated vines here for generations, with the Scharzhofberger vineyard at the heart of their reputation. The estate is renowned for its extraordinary range of Prädikat wines—from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese—whose purity, finesse, and longevity have earned them cult status and some of the highest prices ever paid for white wine. Consistently lauded by critics and collectors alike, Egon Müller stands as a standard-bearer for the Mosel, demonstrating just how profound, ageworthy, and nuanced Riesling from this storied region can be.
