Description
Egon Müller zu Scharzhof’s Scharzhofberger Auslese 2021 is one of the most coveted expressions of Riesling from the Mosel, sourced from the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard. This is a benchmark sweet Riesling that marries intensity, precision and filigreed elegance like almost no other wine in the world. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this bottle represents the pinnacle of what German Riesling can achieve in purity, finesse and age‑worthiness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Scharzhofberger Auslese shines a pale, luminous gold with green reflections, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is immediately captivating: layers of white peach, ripe apricot and Mirabelle plum interweave with notes of lime blossom, honeysuckle, wet slate and a whiff of crushed herbs and citrus zest. As it opens, subtle nuances of honeycomb, lemon curd and a delicate smokiness emerge, adding remarkable depth.
On the palate, this Auslese is at once rich and ethereal. Juicy stone fruits, sweet citrus, pineapple and ripe pear glide over the tongue, framed by a razor‑sharp, crystalline acidity that keeps the sweetness perfectly in check. The interplay of sweetness and minerality is stunning, with that signature Scharzhofberg slate character running through the long, lingering finish. The texture is silky yet weightless, leaving a mouthwatering impression of saline freshness. While already beautiful in its youth, this wine has extraordinary aging potential: properly cellared, it can evolve gracefully for several decades, gaining complexity, subtle spice, and tertiary notes of beeswax, dried apricot and chamomile.
Production
The Scharzhofberger vineyard, set on the steep, slate‑rich slopes above the Saar (a Mosel tributary), is one of Germany’s most revered terroirs. Its Devonian slate soils, cool climate and excellent drainage produce Rieslings of exceptional finesse, tension and aromatic precision. Grapes for the Auslese are painstakingly selected by hand, often in multiple passes through the vineyard, to capture only the ripest, healthiest berries with just the right touch of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) to enhance concentration and complexity. In the cellar, Egon Müller follows a traditional, minimalist approach: gentle pressing, slow, cool fermentation—typically with indigenous yeasts—in stainless steel or old large oak casks (Fuder), and extended time on fine lees. This low‑intervention style allows the unique character of Scharzhofberg and the 2021 vintage to shine through, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity and balance.
Food & Serving
This Auslese is a superb partner for fine, nuanced cuisine. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, rich pâtés, blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, and dishes that walk the line between salty and sweet. It also complements Asian cuisine with gentle heat and aromatic spice—think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with chili, ginger and lemongrass—as well as fruit‑based desserts such as poached pears, citrus tarts and stone‑fruit pastries. For optimal enjoyment, serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but opening the bottle 30–60 minutes before serving or gently swirling in the glass will help the wine unfold its aromatic complexity.
Producer
The Scharzhof estate, led today by Egon Müller IV, is widely regarded as one of the greatest producers of Riesling on the planet. Located in Wiltingen on the Saar, the family has been cultivating vines on the famed Scharzhofberg since the late 18th century, building a reputation for wines of incomparable elegance, longevity and terroir expression. Egon Müller’s sweet Rieslings—from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese—are among the most sought‑after and collectible white wines in the world, frequently commanding record prices at auction. The estate’s unwavering commitment to low yields, meticulous handwork in the vineyard and a classical, restrained cellar philosophy has made it a reference point not just for the Mosel and Germany, but for world‑class white wine more broadly.
