Description
Egon Müller zu Scharzhof, Scharzhof Riesling QbA 2024 is a quintessential Mosel white, capturing the pure, racy character of Riesling from one of Germany’s most revered estates. Crafted as the gateway wine to the legendary Scharzhofberg, it offers a remarkably refined expression of fruit, minerality and finesse. This is a wine that brings the pedigree of one of the world’s top Riesling producers into a highly approachable, early-drinking style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Scharzhof Riesling QbA shows a pale straw color with greenish highlights, reflecting its youthful freshness and vibrancy. The nose is delicately expressive, opening with lime zest, green apple and white peach, followed by hints of white flowers, crushed slate, and a touch of herbal lift.
On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, precise and finely etched, with a vivid line of acidity that keeps everything wonderfully taut and refreshing. Expect flavors of citrus (lime and grapefruit), orchard fruits and subtle stone fruits, underpinned by a distinctive wet-stone minerality that is so characteristic of the Saar. A touch of residual sweetness is beautifully balanced by the bright acidity, creating a harmonious, almost featherweight feel. The finish is long, clean and mouthwatering, with lingering citrus and mineral notes. Enjoyable now for its youthful energy and purity, it will gain complexity and nuance over the next 5–8 years in bottle, potentially longer in good cellaring conditions.
Production
Sourced from estate and contracted vineyards around the Saar valley, the grapes for Scharzhof Riesling QbA come from steep, slate-rich slopes that define this cool Mosel subregion. The blue and grey slate soils store heat while imparting that signature saline-mineral character to the wines, and the river influences help moderate the climate, extending the ripening season. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and minimal damage, preserving the natural acidity and aromatic delicacy of Riesling. In the cellar, vinification is kept deliberately traditional and restrained: gentle pressing, cool fermentation—often in stainless steel and large neutral foudres—and extended time on fine lees to build texture without masking the clarity of fruit. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its terroir and of the classic Saar style: light, precise and mineral-driven.
Food & Serving
This Scharzhof Riesling QbA is a versatile food partner, particularly well-suited to delicate, aromatic cuisine. It shines alongside fresh seafood (oysters, prawns, ceviche, steamed mussels), lightly spiced Asian dishes (sushi, Vietnamese salads, Thai dishes with lime and lemongrass), and classic German fare such as schnitzel, river fish, or soft cow’s milk cheeses. Its fine balance of gentle sweetness and brisk acidity also makes it an excellent match for mildly spicy dishes and aromatic herbs. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10 °C. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving, or allowing it to warm slightly in the glass, will help the aromatics fully unfurl.
Producer
Egon Müller zu Scharzhof is one of the most iconic names in the world of Riesling, and arguably the benchmark producer of the Saar, a prestigious subregion of the Mosel. The family’s history at the Scharzhof estate dates back to the late 18th century, and over generations they have built a reputation for crafting some of the most refined and long-lived Rieslings on the planet, particularly from the famed Scharzhofberg vineyard. Today, the estate is synonymous with purity, precision and elegance, with its top wines regularly commanding global attention at auctions and on fine wine lists. The Scharzhof Riesling QbA serves as the estate’s introduction to this storied style, carrying the same meticulous standards and terroir expression that have made Egon Müller a reference point not only in the Mosel, but in the world of white wine.
