Description

The 2023 Scharzhof Riesling from Egon Müller zu Scharzhof is a radiant, finely etched expression of the Saar, crafted from a blend of three esteemed vineyards. Saarburg Rausch leads the cuvée, supported by fruit from Wiltinger Braunfels and Rosenberg, both neighboring the legendary Scharzhofberg. This wine’s unique selling point lies in its combination of pedigree terroirs and Müller’s hallmark precision, resulting in a Riesling that is at once generous, saline, and strikingly focused. Rooted in one of the Mosel’s most storied estates, it offers a contemporary glimpse into a lineage of Rieslings that have shaped the region’s global reputation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Scharzhof Riesling shows a pale, luminous straw color with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately refined and inviting, with ripe yet delicate Saar Riesling aromatics: white peach, green apple, and citrus zest layered over fine, spicy slate notes and a whisper of white flowers and herbs. On the palate, the wine is round and juicy, with more mid-palate weight than its shimmering appearance might suggest. Stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a mouthwatering, crystalline acidity, while a distinct salty, mineral edge underscores its Saar origins. It feels both generous and tightly controlled, becoming leaner and more focused toward the long, persistent finish. The balance of fruit, acidity, and subtle sweetness gives it immediate appeal, yet the structure and minerality indicate excellent aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and nuance with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from steep, slate-rich slopes in the Saar, this Riesling blends fruit from Saarburg Rausch with parcels in Wiltinger Braunfels and Rosenberg, sites that share proximity and character with the famed Scharzhofberg. The cool climate and rocky, weathered slate soils imprint the wine with tension, finesse, and a distinct mineral drive. Grapes are traditionally hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar, often in multiple passes through the vineyards. In keeping with the estate’s classical approach, fermentation typically takes place with native yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and large old oak fuders, at controlled, relatively cool temperatures to preserve aromatics. The wine is then rested on its fine lees to build texture and complexity, before being bottled with minimal intervention to showcase the clarity of site and vintage.

Food & Serving
This Scharzhof Riesling is wonderfully versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with delicately spiced Asian cuisine, sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or marinated seafood, as well as classic German dishes such as trout with herbs, light pork preparations, or veal schnitzel. It also shines alongside fresh goat cheese, soft-ripened cheeses, and vegetable-based dishes like asparagus, fennel, or lightly spiced vegetarian curries. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to let the aromatics fully unfold. Decanting is not strictly necessary for a young Riesling of this style, but a short time in a carafe or simply opening the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving can help the wine open up and reveal additional layers.

Producer
Egon Müller zu Scharzhof is one of the most revered names in the world of Riesling, with a history at Scharzhof that stretches back to the late 18th century. Located in the Saar, a cooler tributary region of the Mosel, the estate is best known for the legendary Scharzhofberg vineyard, whose wines regularly rank among the most sought-after and long-lived Rieslings on the planet. Müller’s meticulous viticulture, extremely low yields, and traditional cellar practices have helped define the global benchmark for Mosel-Saar Riesling, particularly in the Prädikat styles. Consistently acclaimed by critics and collectors alike, the estate’s wines are famed for their combination of purity, delicacy, and almost weightless intensity, making Egon Müller a true reference point for the region and the variety.

It’s light, super fresh, and dangerously drinkable, with juicy peach and apricot, a touch of citrus with mineral touch. A very gastronomic wine perfect with seafood, especially dishes with an Asian touch.
