Description

Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese 1970 is a remarkable mature Riesling from one of the Saar’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced by the legendary Scharzhof estate, this bottle combines the elegance of the Scharzhofberger site with the extraordinary cellar potential for which fine German Riesling is renowned. With its age, rarity and historic vintage, it is especially appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of mature wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a luminous golden hue, with its precise appearance naturally dependent on bottle age and storage. Its bouquet is richly developed, revealing ripe peach, apricot and citrus alongside delicate mature-wine nuances and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is complex and finely balanced, combining concentrated fruit with refreshing acidity. The finish is long, elegant and marked by a distinctive Saar-like mineral freshness. At more than five decades old, this is a fully mature wine best enjoyed for its evolution, finesse and individuality rather than youthful fruit. Proper storage is essential, and the condition of the individual bottle will influence its expression. It is recommended to drink this historic Spätlese now, while well-preserved examples may continue to offer pleasure.

Production
The grapes come from Scharzhofberger, a renowned steep, slate-influenced vineyard site near Wiltingen on the Saar. Its cool climate, mineral soils and long growing season are particularly well suited to Riesling, allowing the grapes to develop ripe aromas while retaining the acidity needed for longevity. As a traditional German Spätlese, the wine was made from naturally late-harvested, fully ripe grapes, with the detailed cellar practices of the 1970 vintage contributing to its mature, layered character.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It pairs beautifully with delicate fish, shellfish, lightly seasoned poultry and refined dishes with creamy or gently sweet elements; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine. Because of its age, decanting is best approached with caution: stand the bottle upright before opening and, if necessary, decant briefly to remove sediment, but avoid prolonged aeration.

Producer
Egon Müller’s Scharzhof estate is one of Germany’s most prestigious Riesling producers, with a winemaking tradition stretching back centuries. The estate’s reputation rests particularly on its exceptional wines from Scharzhofberger, a vineyard regarded as one of the Saar’s finest expressions of Riesling. Egon Müller wines are celebrated internationally for their purity, balance, longevity and scarcity, making this 1970 Spätlese a distinguished example of the estate’s historic style and an attractive addition to a serious collection.
