Description

A rare bottle from the exceptional 1969 vintage, Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese comes from one of the Saar’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced at the historic Scharzhof estate, it combines the concentration and sweetness of Auslese with the remarkable freshness for which Scharzhofberger Riesling is renowned. A compelling choice for collectors and enthusiasts of mature German Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and development. Its mature bouquet brings together ripe orchard and citrus fruit, honeyed notes and a distinctive mineral character, with subtle spicy nuances emerging with time in the glass. On the palate, the natural sweetness is beautifully balanced by lively acidity, giving the wine freshness, precision and elegance despite its age. The finish is long and intense, with lingering citrus, honey and delicate spice. As a 1969 wine, it is best appreciated now, although its condition and future cellaring potential will depend greatly on storage history, fill level and provenance.

Production
The grapes were sourced from the renowned Scharzhofberger vineyard in the Saar, a steep site known for its mineral-rich soils and cool climate, which help Riesling retain its characteristic acidity. As an Auslese, the wine was made from selectively harvested, fully ripe grapes. Specific details regarding the harvest and vinification of this historic bottle are not available, but its balance of sweetness, acidity and mineral depth reflects the traditional Saar Riesling style.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing the wine time to open in the glass. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple tart and blue or mature cheeses, while its acidity also works well with foie gras and gently spiced dishes. Decanting is not essential and may risk dissipating delicate mature aromas; instead, open carefully and consider using a clean wine funnel if sediment is present.

Producer
Egon Müller’s Scharzhof estate is one of Germany’s most historic and respected Riesling producers. Located in the Saar, the estate is closely associated with the prestigious Scharzhofberger vineyard, whose wines are prized for their combination of purity, minerality, sweetness and longevity. Bottles from mature vintages such as 1969 are particularly sought after by collectors, offering a rare opportunity to experience the evolution of Saar Riesling from a renowned producer.
