Description

From one of the most revered names in German wine, the Egon Müller Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2021 is a benchmark sweet Riesling that perfectly captures the elegance and intensity of the Saar within the greater Mosel region. This is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts alike, offering both immediate pleasure and remarkable aging potential. Sourced exclusively from the famed Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, it showcases the precision, purity and finesse that have made Egon Müller a global reference for Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese shines a bright, pale gold with youthful green highlights, hinting at its freshness and vitality. The nose is wonderfully expressive and layered: ripe stone fruits such as white peach and apricot mingle with notes of lime zest, mandarin, and juicy pear, wrapped in a delicate veil of white flowers, honeysuckle and a subtle slatey minerality typical of the Saar. Hints of honey, candied citrus peel and a whisper of herbal spice add complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this Auslese is rich yet incredibly poised, with a succulent sweetness that is beautifully balanced by razor-sharp acidity. Flavors of ripe peach, nectarine, citrus confit and baked apple unfold alongside nuances of wet stone, green herbs and delicate honeycomb. The texture is silky and mouth-coating but never heavy, carried by a crystalline, mineral-laden finish that lingers long after each sip. This is a wine with significant aging potential – easily 20–30 years or more in a good cellar – during which it will gain even greater aromatic complexity, developing notes of beeswax, dried apricot, marmalade and petrol while retaining its vibrant core.

Production
Wiltinger Braune Kupp is a steep, south- to southwest-facing vineyard overlooking the Saar, characterized by weathered Devonian slate soils that impart remarkable finesse, minerality and tension to the Riesling. The cool, marginal climate of the Saar allows for long ripening, preserving high acidity while concentrating flavor and sugar in select late-harvested berries. For this Auslese, the fruit is meticulously hand-picked in multiple passes (selective harvesting) to capture clusters and berries affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) at perfect maturity. In the cellar, Egon Müller follows a philosophy of minimal intervention: gentle pressing, slow and cool fermentation—often with indigenous yeasts—in traditional large oak casks (Fuder), and prolonged aging on fine lees. The result is a naturally balanced, low-alcohol, high-extract wine where sweetness, acidity and minerality are in harmonious equilibrium, with no need for heavy manipulation or new oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Auslese is remarkably versatile at the table. It shines alongside rich pâtés, foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort or Stilton, and spicy Asian cuisine—particularly dishes featuring chili, ginger and aromatic herbs, such as Thai or Szechuan specialties. It also pairs beautifully with fruit-driven desserts (citrus tarts, apple tart, stone fruit cobblers) or can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert in a glass. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C, in a white wine or small universal stem to focus its aromas. Young bottles benefit from 15–20 minutes in the glass rather than extended decanting, but older, mature vintages can be gently decanted to remove any sediment and allow the bouquet to fully unfold.

Producer
Egon Müller is a legendary name in the world of Riesling, synonymous with some of the most sought-after and long-lived white wines on the planet. The Le Gallais estate, closely associated with the Müller family, centers on the historic Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard in the Saar, an area administratively part of the Mosel region but distinct in its cooler climate and racy, mineral-driven style. For generations, the Müller family has championed low yields, meticulous handwork in the steep vineyards, and a traditional, minimalist approach in the cellar, ensuring the purest expression of site and vintage. Their wines routinely command top accolades, record-breaking auction prices and a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers worldwide, firmly establishing Egon Müller as a benchmark producer for noble sweet Rieslings.
