Description

From one of the Mosel’s most revered names, the Egon Müller Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett 2022 is a finely etched expression of Saar Riesling. Sourced from the legendary Braune Kupp vineyard in Wiltingen, this Kabinett balances crystalline freshness with understated sweetness in that effortlessly light, classic Mosel style. It’s a wine that captures the precision and elegance that have made this estate a benchmark for Riesling lovers worldwide.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett shows a pale, shimmering straw color with green reflections, hinting at youth and vibrancy. The nose is immediately lifted and refined: tart yet ripe apple flesh, zesty lemon peel, and a distinct saline, stony note mingle with fresh green yarrow and a touch of delicate smokiness. It’s both inviting and restrained, with a quietly complex, herbal-mineral undercurrent. On the palate, this Kabinett is strikingly fine-boned and juicy, with a filigreed structure that feels almost weightless. Bright, ripe lemon amplifies the tangy interplay of green and red apple, while a subtle, perfectly judged residual sweetness brings in shades of Mirabelle plum. That discreet sweetness never feels sugary; instead, the purity of fruit and firm acidity seem to “consume” it, leaving the finish poised on the edge of dryness (“best enjoyed on the dry side”). The result is a long, mouthwatering, ultra-refreshing finish with great aging potential: over 10–15 years, expect more honeyed, herbal and mineral nuances to emerge while the wine retains its core of tension and finesse.

Production
Wiltinger Braune Kupp is a steep, south- to southwest-facing slate vineyard on the cool, breezy Saar, a tributary of the Mosel, known for producing Rieslings of remarkable delicacy and cut. The slate soils, rich in minerals and excellent at storing and radiating warmth, help grapes ripen slowly while preserving high natural acidity and strong terroir expression. Harvest is traditionally done by hand on these demanding slopes, with rigorous selection of only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe Riesling clusters. In the cellar, Egon Müller Le Gallais follows a classical, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, slow, spontaneous fermentation (often in stainless steel or traditional large oak) and extended time on the fine lees, allowing the wine’s natural balance of fruit, acidity, and modest residual sugar to define the final style without heavy winemaking signatures.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett’s delicate sweetness and razor-sharp acidity make it remarkably versatile at the table. It’s superb with lightly spiced Asian dishes (think sushi, sashimi, Thai salads, or Vietnamese spring rolls), as well as classic pairings like ceviche, fresh oysters, or simply grilled white fish with citrus and herbs. It also complements soft cheeses (goat cheese, young bloomy rinds) and light poultry dishes with lemon or ginger. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to emphasize its freshness and precision. Decanting is generally not necessary, but pouring it into good white wine glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will allow the aromatics to unfurl beautifully.

Producer
Egon Müller Le Gallais represents the Saar branch of one of Germany’s most iconic Riesling dynasties. The Müller family has been synonymous with world-class Mosel and Saar Riesling for generations, crafting wines that are prized for their finesse, longevity, and almost weightless intensity. The Le Gallais holdings in Wiltinger Braune Kupp are particularly cherished, showcasing a distinct, finely chiseled character that complements the better-known Scharzhofberg. The estate’s Kabinett and Prädikat wines are regularly counted among the greatest examples of Riesling globally, and their consistency and age-worthiness have cemented Egon Müller’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the Mosel-Saar region.

have recommended Egon Müller's monopole vineyard before, an exceptionally delicious wine where razor-sharp acidity is balanced by sweetness, gracefully dancing floral notes with freshly squeezed lime and summer rain. Reduced price, can be drunk now or in 30 years.
