Tasting Notes
In the glass, Eduardo Garza Negre 2020 shows a dense, almost opaque ruby core with violet reflections and slow, stained tears on the rim, hinting at both extract and structure. The nose is generous and complex: ripe blackberries, dark cherries and damson plum are wrapped in notes of warm slate, dried Mediterranean herbs, licorice, cracked black pepper and a touch of cocoa and smoke from careful oak aging. On the palate, this is full-bodied and structured, with a firm but polished tannin frame and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the richness in check. Flavors of black raspberry, blackcurrant and cherry compote unfold alongside graphite, roasted coffee bean, sweet spice and a subtle balsamic lift. The finish is long, savory and mineral-driven, echoing the licorella (slate) soils with a salty, almost ferrous edge. This vintage is enjoyable now with a good decant, but has the concentration and backbone to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and softness over time.

Production
Sourced from steep, low-yielding vineyards in Priorat, Eduardo Garza Negre 2020 reflects the classic licorella slate soils that define the region, along with the Mediterranean climate moderated by altitude and night-time cooling. Old Carignan and Grenache vines, complemented by Syrah, are typically hand-harvested in small crates to ensure pristine fruit, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. The grapes are vinified parcel by parcel, often with gentle destemming and temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve purity of fruit and aromatic lift. Extended maceration extracts fine-grained tannins and deep color, followed by aging in quality oak barrels to integrate structure, polish the texture and add subtle layers of spice without overshadowing the distinct mineral character of Priorat.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, Iberico pork presa, or hearty stews with chorizo and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with game birds, mushroom risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous red wine glasses to let the aromatics unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s layered fruit, spice and mineral notes.

Born and raised on his family’s coffee farm on the slopes of Esquipulas in Chiquimula, Guatemala, Eduardo Garza grew up immersed in the craft of cultivating distinctive, single-origin beverages. That early exposure to altitude, terroir and meticulous farming eventually led him to Priorat, one of Spain’s most dramatic and acclaimed wine regions. Here, he channels his background into old-vine Carignan and Grenache, applying the same precision and respect for origin that defined his family’s coffee. Although relatively young compared with some historic Priorat estates, Eduardo Garza has quickly earned a reputation for expressive, site-focused wines that combine the intensity of Priorat’s slate soils with a refined, modern sensibility, adding a fresh and personal voice to this prestigious Catalan appellation.
