Description

Eduard Hauth-Kerpen Erben Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel 1976 is a rare mature sweet wine from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Harvested in the exceptional 1976 vintage, this highly concentrated Riesling reflects the tradition of Beerenauslese wines, made from individually selected grapes affected by noble rot. The gold capsule highlights its special selection and collectible character.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, with the developed colour expected from a mature Riesling Beerenauslese. Its aromatic profile is rich and expressive, offering ripe peach, apricot and honey, complemented by more evolved nuances from its long bottle maturation. On the palate, it is full-bodied and lusciously sweet, yet lifted by the firm acidity characteristic of Mosel Riesling. Citrus notes add freshness to the concentrated fruit, while the finish is long, smooth and lingering. At this age, it should be considered a mature wine ready to enjoy, although well-stored bottles may continue to develop depending on their provenance and storage conditions.

Production
The grapes come from the steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, a renowned site whose slate soils and favourable exposure help Riesling achieve both ripeness and vibrant acidity. Beerenauslese is produced from carefully hand-selected, overripe grapes, often concentrated by Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This natural process reduces the water content of the berries and intensifies their sugar, flavour and aroma before gentle vinification creates the wine’s characteristic richness and balance.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent match for crème brûlée, fruit tarts, tiramisu and other refined desserts, while blue cheese or foie gras can provide a savoury contrast. It is equally rewarding as an aperitif or digestif. Decanting is not usually necessary, but an older bottle may be stood upright before opening and carefully decanted if sediment is present; handle gently to preserve its delicate mature aromas.

Producer
Eduard Hauth-Kerpen Erben is associated with the Mosel’s long-standing Riesling tradition, and this bottling showcases the region’s ability to produce sweet wines of remarkable concentration and longevity. The combination of the prestigious Wehlener Sonnenuhr site, the 1976 vintage and Beerenauslese classification makes this a particularly distinctive bottle for collectors and enthusiasts of mature German Riesling.
