Description
Barolo Cannubi 2020 from E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is a beautifully poised expression of one of Barolo’s most revered crus. Despite the warmth of the vintage, this wine remains finely etched and lifted, with exceptional fruit purity and a quietly powerful structure. Produced from Nebbiolo on the historic Cannubi hill, it combines classic Barolo elegance with the depth and generosity of 2020 in a very limited production of just 4,000 bottles.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cannubi shows a luminous, deep garnet hue with youthful ruby reflections at the rim. The nose is immediately enticing and precise: dark cherry and blackcurrant weave together with rose petals, violet, pink peppercorn and a distinct note of crushed white limestone, giving a sense of both perfume and tension.
On the palate, the wine is fine and detailed, yet with more flesh and grip than cooler years. Juicy, ripe red and dark berries unfold over a core of vibrant acidity, keeping everything lively and mouthwatering. The tannins are firm but ultra-fine, slightly grainy in texture, wrapping the fruit without overwhelming it and pointing clearly to long-term aging. The finish is long, elegant and sapid, with lingering notes of rose, spice and stone. While already charming with some air, this 2020 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining complexity and nuance in bottle.
Production
Cannubi is one of Barolo’s most legendary vineyards, a south to southeast-facing ridge in the heart of the appellation where sandy marls, calcareous clays and ancient marine sediments give wines of both perfume and finesse. The particular Cannubi parcels farmed by Chiara Boschis are cultivated organically, with careful hand work in the vines to ensure balanced ripening, even in warmer vintages. Harvest is done entirely by hand, with strict selection of clusters both in the vineyard and at the winery. The Nebbiolo grapes are traditionally vinified: a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by élevage in carefully chosen oak (predominantly small French barrels and/or large casks, depending on parcel and vintage) to refine structure while preserving the purity of the fruit and the mineral signature of Cannubi.
Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi 2020 shines alongside refined, savory dishes that can match its aromatic intensity and structure. Think classic Piedmontese cuisine such as tajarin with white truffle, braised veal or beef (brasato al Barolo), roasted lamb, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes with porcini and truffle. Aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Castelmagno or well-matured Comté are also excellent partners. Serve at 16–18°C in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the youthful tannins; as the wine ages, a shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will suffice.
Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s historic names, revitalized and elevated by Chiara Boschis, who is widely considered one of the region’s benchmark artisans. Taking the reins of the estate in the late 1980s, she became one of the first women to lead a major Barolo cellar and quickly gained a reputation for meticulous vineyard work and a precise, expressive style of winemaking. Based in Barolo village, the estate’s holdings in top crus such as Cannubi are among the most prized in the area. Chiara was an early adopter of organic viticulture in Barolo and is recognized for her role in championing sustainable practices and terroir-driven wines. Today, E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is regarded as a reference producer in Piedmont, consistently earning high critical acclaim and helping to define the modern, yet classically rooted face of Barolo.
