Description

From one of Barolo’s most revered crus, E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2018 in magnum format captures the pure, classical soul of Nebbiolo. This certified organic wine delivers a finely etched tapestry of wild berries, rose petals and delicate spice, wrapped in the unmistakable Cannubi elegance. With under one hectare farmed on this legendary hillside and a total production of just 3,594 bottles, it stands among the most sought-after Baroli of the vintage and a benchmark expression of this historic MGA.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Cannubi shows a luminous garnet core with the characteristic orange-tinged rim that hints at Nebbiolo’s noble evolution. The nose is detailed and perfumed, opening with wild red berries, rose, dried lilac and violet, followed by subtle notes of licorice, orange peel and an earthy whisper of white truffle. A fine mineral thread and hints of dried herbs add complexity as the wine unfolds in the glass. On the palate, it is poised and finely structured, with a vibrant, lifted red-fruit profile—think wild strawberries and sour cherry—supported by very refined, chalk-dusted tannins. The mid-palate is savory and linear, showing layers of spice, tea leaf and undergrowth, all framed by fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine tense and energetic. The finish is long, floral and mineral-driven, with a lingering echo of rose and truffle. In magnum, this Barolo has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with a decant, it will gain further complexity and harmony over 12–20 years, and likely longer under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Chiara Boschis farms just under one hectare on the famed Cannubi hill, one of Barolo’s most historic and highly prized vineyards. Here, old Miocene-era calcareous clay soils and an ideal south to southeast exposure give Nebbiolo both aromatic lift and refined structure. The vines are cultivated organically and meticulously by hand, with low yields to ensure concentration and purity of fruit. Harvest is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful selection of the bunches. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with a traditional maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic depth, followed by aging in carefully chosen oak (predominantly small barrels) to refine texture without overwhelming the wine’s delicate Cannubi character. The result is a Barolo that marries classic structure with precision and finesse.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi is a superb partner for refined dishes that can match its complexity and structure. Think truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle, braised veal shank, roasted lamb, or game birds such as guinea fowl and pigeon. Mature hard cheeses, particularly aged Parmigiano Reggiano or a well-aged pecorino, also pair beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in magnum format, the wine benefits from a generous decant—ideally 1.5 to 3 hours when young—to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully harmonize. In more mature bottles, a shorter, gentler decant is recommended to preserve the more fragile tertiary notes.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli is one of Barolo’s historic names, elevated to cult status under the stewardship of Chiara Boschis, who took over the estate in the late 1980s. As one of the first women to lead a top Barolo estate, she helped shape the region’s modern renaissance, combining meticulous vineyard work with a sensitive touch in the cellar. Based in Barolo village and deeply rooted in grand crus like Cannubi, the estate is now certified organic and recognized for its intense yet finely balanced wines that capture both place and precision. Chiara’s Baroli consistently rank among the most acclaimed in the region, and Cannubi is widely considered one of her crowning achievements, a reference point for this legendary hillside.
