Description
E. Guigal’s Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Blanc 2023 is a refined Northern Rhône white that combines generous texture with impressive terroir expression. Complex and beautifully balanced, it reflects Guigal’s long-standing expertise in crafting distinguished Rhône wines, a tradition that began in Ampuis in 1946.
Tasting Notes
The nose is expressive and layered, revealing hazelnut, ripe yellow fruit, floral nuances and a subtle touch of vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and creamy, with fleshy fruit, balanced freshness and a gently rounded texture. Its complexity and poise allow the character of the Saint-Joseph terroir to shine through.
This is an inviting wine in its youth, but its structure and oak maturation should allow it to develop additional nutty, floral and honeyed nuances with careful cellaring over the next several years.
Production
The wine comes from the steep, often granite-influenced slopes of the Saint-Joseph appellation in the Northern Rhône, where the terroir contributes both richness and mineral definition. Guigal farms its vineyards with an organic approach and low yields, aiming to preserve the natural character of the fruit. Following temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is matured in a combination of new and used barrels, adding texture and complexity without overshadowing the vineyard expression.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. It is an excellent match for shellfish and crustaceans, grilled or roasted fish, and richer fish dishes with creamy sauces. It also pairs particularly well with goat’s cheese. Decanting is not essential, although a brief period of aeration in the glass can help reveal its layered aromas and creamy palate.
Producer
Founded by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis in 1946, E. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers. The estate is renowned for pioneering single-vineyard bottlings in Côte-Rôtie, including La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque, and for producing celebrated wines such as Château d’Ampuis, Condrieu La Doriane and Hermitage Ex Voto. Today, the family’s third generation continues the work, combining respect for nature, low-intervention cellar practices and a deep commitment to expressing the region’s finest terroirs.
