Description
E. Guigal Hermitage 2021 is a powerful, classic expression of Syrah from one of the Northern Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. Combining deep fruit, firm tannins and refined oak, it reflects both the concentration of Hermitage and Guigal’s renowned expertise in long élevage. The Guigal family has helped define the modern reputation of Rhône wines since the house was founded in Côte-Rôtie in 1946.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby colour with striking purple highlights. Its nose opens with aromas of ripe red fruit, blackcurrant and warming spices, complemented by elegant, finely integrated wood tones and a subtle hint of vanilla.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with pronounced but well-structured tannins supporting concentrated cassis and dark fruit flavours. Notes of liquorice and spice emerge on the long, persistent finish. This is a youthful Hermitage with considerable ageing potential; it should develop greater complexity and softness over the next 10–20 years, provided it is stored well.
Production
Produced in the Hermitage appellation of the Northern Rhône, this red wine is made from Syrah grown on the region’s steep, sun-exposed slopes, where the distinctive soils and Rhône climate encourage depth, structure and aromatic concentration. The wine undergoes temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation followed by an extended four-week maceration in tanks. It then matures for 36 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, giving the wine its polished wood character while allowing the powerful fruit and tannins to integrate.
Food & Serving
Its structure and depth make it an excellent partner for roast beef, venison, lamb, game birds and slow-cooked beef dishes. It also works beautifully with richly flavoured mushroom preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to open the aromas and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, E. Guigal has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential and respected estates. Now led by the third generation, the family combines traditional winemaking with a strong focus on precision and maturation. Guigal’s acquisition of Château d’Ampuis and its investment in barrel-making have strengthened the house’s control over élevage, while the purchase of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017 expanded its presence into the Southern Rhône. Today, Guigal is recognised for producing some of the region’s most ambitious and age-worthy wines.
