Description
E. Guigal Hermitage 2020 is a powerful Northern Rhône red made from Syrah, combining the depth and structure of the Hermitage appellation with Guigal’s signature precision. Its concentrated fruit, refined oak character and pronounced tannins give it both immediate appeal and excellent long-term cellaring potential. Hermitage is one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic and revered wine regions, celebrated for age-worthy Syrah.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in colour with vivid purple highlights. The nose opens with aromas of ripe red fruit, blackcurrant and spice, complemented by elegant toasted oak and vanilla nuances.
Powerful and full-bodied on the palate, the wine is marked by firm, plentiful tannins and concentrated blackcurrant flavours. The long, persistent finish reveals notes of liquorice, vanilla and warm spices. With its depth, structure and extended maturation in oak, the 2020 vintage should develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years, provided it is stored in suitable conditions.
Production
Produced from Syrah grown in the prestigious Hermitage appellation of the Northern Rhône, where steep, sun-exposed slopes and mineral-rich soils help produce deeply concentrated, structured wines. The grapes are harvested from the Hermitage vineyards and undergo temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation, followed by an extended four-week maceration in vats to extract colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is then aged for 36 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, adding spice, vanilla and subtle toasted notes while allowing the powerful fruit to integrate.
Food & Serving
This structured Hermitage is an excellent match for roast or grilled beef, venison, lamb, game birds and hearty stews. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and dishes featuring black pepper, herbs or earthy mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for around 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and open the aromas; older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.
Producer
Founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, E. Guigal has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers. Now led by the third generation, the family combines traditional Rhône winemaking with continued innovation. Guigal began producing its own barrels in 2003, reviving an important craft at the historic Château d’Ampuis, and strengthened its presence in the Southern Rhône with the acquisition of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017. Today, the house is recognised internationally for its expressive, age-worthy Rhône wines.
