Description
E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc 2019 is a refined Northern Rhône white wine from one of France’s most prestigious appellations. Based primarily on Marsanne, with the variety’s natural richness balanced by freshness and structure, it combines the generosity of Hermitage with Guigal’s hallmark precision. The 2019 vintage offers both immediate appeal and impressive cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden yellow in appearance, this Hermitage Blanc opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe pear, white peach and apricot, followed by notes of acacia blossom, honey, almonds and subtle toasted oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and layered, with a creamy texture supported by lively acidity. Stone fruit and citrus flavours develop alongside hints of spice, vanilla and mineral depth, leading to a long, elegant finish.
The wine is approachable now with some aeration, but its concentration and structure make it particularly well suited to further ageing. Stored in good conditions, it should develop added complexity over the next 10–15 years or more, with notes of beeswax, dried fruit and hazelnut emerging over time.
Production
Hermitage’s steep, sun-exposed slopes and varied soils—including granite, alluvial deposits and gravelly terraces—provide an ideal setting for structured, age-worthy white wines. The cuvée is made predominantly from Marsanne, traditionally the leading white grape of Hermitage, with a small proportion of Roussanne contributing aromatic lift and finesse. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested at optimal ripeness before fermentation and maturation in oak, including a proportion of new barrels, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity while preserving its Rhône character.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C, allowing it to warm slightly in the glass and reveal its full aromatic range. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled fish, lobster, scallops, poultry in a creamy sauce and veal, while its richness also complements mature cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Decanting is not essential, but 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine when enjoyed young; older bottles are best handled gently and served soon after opening.
Producer
Founded by Étienne Guigal in 1946 in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, E. Guigal has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected family wineries. Now led by the third generation, the house combines traditional Rhône expertise with carefully developed modern practices. Guigal’s acquisition of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017 strengthened its presence across both the northern and southern Rhône, while its barrel-making venture, established in 2003 at Château d’Ampuis, reflects the family’s commitment to mastering every aspect of wine production.
