E. Guigal, Ermitage Ex-Voto 2022

E. Guigal’s Ermitage Ex-Voto is one of the Rhône Valley’s most prestigious single-vineyard wines, made only in exceptional vintages from carefully selected plots in Hermitage. A powerful, age-worthy expression of Syrah, it reflects Guigal’s reputation for combining intense fruit, refined oak and remarkable cellaring potential. The cuvée forms part of the estate’s collection of Rhône “crown jewels,” alongside Côte Rôtie La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deeply dark ruby-red colour with distinctive mauve highlights. Its complex nose opens with concentrated black fruit, then develops notes of leather, liquorice, coffee and exotic oriental spices. On the palate, it makes a powerful entrance, with impressive richness, depth and structure. Firm, important tannins provide a commanding backbone, while the dense fruit and carefully integrated oak promise impressive development in bottle. With suitable cellaring, Ermitage Ex-Voto can evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining savoury, smoky and truffle-like complexity.

Production
Produced in the northern Rhône from Syrah grown in the steep, highly regarded Hermitage vineyards, the wine benefits from the region’s demanding conditions and low-yielding, carefully tended vines. Guigal works the vineyards with an organic approach and a strong respect for natural balance. The grapes undergo pump-over fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by an extended four-week maceration. The wine is then matured for 42 months in new oak, giving it the depth and polish required to complement its substantial structure.

Food & Serving
This full-bodied Hermitage is best served at around 16–18°C and benefits from decanting for 1–2 hours when young, allowing its powerful fruit and oak to unfold. It is a natural partner for roasted or braised red meats, venison, lamb, beef fillet and game birds, as well as richly flavoured dishes with mushrooms, black olives or pepper-based sauces. Older bottles may require only gentle decanting to remove sediment while preserving their evolved aromas.

Producer
The story of E. Guigal began in 1924, when 14-year-old Étienne Guigal started working in the cellars of Vidal-Fleury. He founded his own domaine in Ampuis in 1946, at the heart of Côte Rôtie, and was later joined by his son Marcel in 1961. Today, the estate is led by Marcel, while the third generation, Philippe Guigal, oversees winemaking. The domaine is recognised as a pioneer of single-vineyard Côte Rôtie and has played a major role in elevating the reputation of the northern Rhône worldwide. Alongside its famous “La, La, La” wines, Château d’Ampuis, Condrieu La Doriane and Ermitage Ex-Voto are among the estate’s most celebrated bottlings.
