Description

E. Guigal’s Ermitage Ex-Voto 2019 is a rare and powerful single-vineyard Syrah from the prestigious Hermitage appellation in the northern Rhône. Produced only in exceptional vintages, it combines remarkable concentration and colour with the firm yet refined tannins that define great Hermitage. Alongside Guigal’s celebrated Côte Rôtie “La, La, La” wines, Ex-Voto is one of the domaine’s great Rhône Valley cuvées.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows an intense ruby-red colour, hinting at the depth and concentration within. Its complex bouquet opens with ripe black fruit, followed by notes of leather, liquorice, oriental spices and a subtle touch of eucalyptus. On the palate, it is rich, commanding and beautifully structured, with impressive intensity and a clear expression of its terroir. Firm but elegant tannins provide definition and balance, while the long, powerful finish reveals layers of dark fruit and spice. Ermitage Ex-Voto 2019 has considerable ageing potential and should develop greater aromatic complexity and softness with extended bottle age. It can be enjoyed now after careful decanting, but will reward cellaring for many years—potentially well beyond a decade under ideal conditions.

Production
Made from Syrah grown in the renowned granite terroir of Hermitage, the wine reflects the appellation’s ability to produce deeply concentrated yet distinctive reds. Guigal works with low yields and a strong respect for natural vineyard expression. The grapes undergo remontage in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by alcoholic fermentation and approximately four weeks of skin maceration. The wine is then matured for 40 months in new oak barrels, giving it time to integrate its considerable fruit, tannin and structure.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured game dishes such as venison, wild boar and pheasant, it also works beautifully with roast beef, lamb, braised meats and dishes featuring black pepper or earthy mushrooms. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for at least two to three hours before serving when enjoying the wine young; older bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter period to preserve their developed aromas.

Producer
E. Guigal was founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, who had begun working in the cellars of Vidal-Fleury as a 14-year-old in 1924. His son Marcel joined the company in 1961, and the family’s third generation, Philippe Guigal, is involved in the winemaking today. The domaine has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers and a pioneer of single-vineyard wines in Côte Rôtie, particularly from La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. Its portfolio also includes Côte Rôtie Château d’Ampuis, Condrieu La Doriane and Hermitage Ex-Voto. Guigal is known for low yields, long élevage and a restrained cellar approach designed to let the vineyard and vintage speak clearly.
