E. Guigal, Côte Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 2022

E. Guigal’s Château d’Ampuis 2022 is a powerful and refined Côte-Rôtie, named after the historic château that has been the heart of the Guigal estate since 1995. Combining the appellation’s characteristic aromatic elegance with concentrated Rhône Valley depth, it stands out for its intense dark-fruit profile, pronounced tannins and generous new-oak character.

Tasting Notes
Deep red in colour with attractive mauve reflections, this wine opens with expressive aromas of black fruit, warm spices and finely integrated oak. On the palate, ripe plum and blackberry flavours are joined by notes of vanilla, creating a full-bodied, richly textured impression. The structure is intense yet well balanced, with firm tannins providing length and definition. Although enjoyable with decanting, the 2022 has the concentration and framework to develop beautifully in bottle over the next 10–15 years, provided it is stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The vineyards are planted on Côte-Rôtie’s steep and varied soils, including granite and sandstone, which help give the wine both mineral depth and aromatic complexity. After harvesting, the grapes are vinified in stainless-steel tanks, with alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperatures and an extended four-week maceration on the skins. The wine is then matured for 38 months in new oak, giving added volume, spice and vanilla nuances.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Côte-Rôtie is especially well suited to game, venison, roasted or grilled red meat, and hearty stews. It also pairs well with mature, full-flavoured cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and decant for approximately 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the aromas to fully unfold.

Founded in 1945 by Étienne Guigal, E. Guigal has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential producers, renowned for its outstanding Côte-Rôtie wines. The estate’s acquisition of Château d’Ampuis in the 1990s strengthened its connection to the appellation and provided a historic home for its Côte-Rôtie production. Today, Guigal is celebrated internationally for combining traditional Rhône winemaking with meticulous élevage and long maturation in oak.
