Description

E. Guigal’s Côte Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2021 is a prestigious Rhône Valley red from one of the appellation’s most respected producers. Named after Guigal’s historic château in Ampuis, it combines the power and structure of Syrah with the aromatic lift traditionally associated with a small proportion of Viognier, resulting in a refined, cellar-worthy wine.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour with striking mauve reflections, the wine opens with expressive aromas of black fruits, spices, vanilla and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously textured, offering concentrated flavours of plum and blackberry alongside subtle smoky and woody nuances. Firm, intense tannins provide structure, while the wine’s balance and depth point to excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, but should develop greater complexity over the next 10–20 years when properly stored.

Production
The grapes come from steep, sun-exposed Côte Rôtie slopes around Ampuis, where granite-based soils and varied aspects help create wines of both concentration and elegance. Guigal farms its vineyards with a strong focus on sustainable, nature-respecting practices and low yields. The harvest is brought to stainless-steel tanks, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation and approximately four weeks of skin maceration. Château d’Ampuis is then matured for an exceptional 38 months in new oak, giving the wine its distinctive depth and polished character.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for game, roast venison, wild boar, beef and other richly flavoured red meats, this Côte Rôtie also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for around 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and allow the layers of fruit, spice and oak to unfold.

Producer
Founded in Ampuis in 1946 by Étienne Guigal, the domaine has become one of the defining names of the Northern Rhône. His son Marcel joined the family business in 1961, and the third generation, Philippe, oversees the winemaking today. Guigal is widely regarded as a pioneer of single-vineyard Côte Rôtie, particularly through its celebrated La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque wines. Alongside these iconic cuvées, Château d’Ampuis remains one of the estate’s flagship expressions of the appellation.
