Description
E. Guigal’s Côte Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2020 is a powerful yet refined expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most prestigious appellations. Crafted predominantly from Syrah, with the traditional inclusion of Viognier, it combines dark fruit, spice and oak with the depth and structure for which Guigal is renowned. The cuvée takes its name from Château d’Ampuis, the historic estate at the heart of the Côte Rôtie and a symbol of the producer’s close connection to the appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is deeply coloured, showing rich ruby-red hues with attractive mauve reflections. The nose opens with intense aromas of ripe black fruit, plums and blackberries, complemented by peppery spice, subtle floral notes and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and beautifully structured, with concentrated dark fruit, vanilla and savoury spice. Firm, polished tannins provide impressive length and balance, while the wine’s concentration suggests excellent aging potential over the next 15–20 years, with further complexity developing in bottle.
Production
The fruit comes from Côte Rôtie vineyards around Ampuis, where steep, rocky slopes and varied soils help produce wines of both power and finesse. Guigal farms with a strong respect for nature and focuses on low yields to achieve concentration and character. The grapes are harvested and placed in stainless-steel tanks, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation and an extended skin maceration of approximately four weeks. The wine is then matured for 38 months in new French oak, giving it a distinctive richness and vanilla-spiced complexity while preserving the intensity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for richly flavoured dishes, this Côte Rôtie is excellent with grilled or braised game, venison, roast lamb, beef and other red meats. Its depth also suits hearty stews and mature, characterful cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended when serving young, both to soften the tannins and to reveal the wine’s layered aromas.
Producer
Founded in Ampuis in 1946 by Étienne Guigal, the domaine has grown into one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential names. Guigal pioneered the modern prestige single-vineyard approach in Côte Rôtie, achieving international recognition with its celebrated La Mouline, La Turque and La Landonne wines, while Château d’Ampuis remains one of the estate’s flagship cuvées. Today, the family’s third generation is involved in winemaking, continuing a tradition built on low yields, careful vineyard work and an understated, precise approach in the cellar.
