Description

E. Guigal’s 2016 Côte Rôtie Château d’Ampuis is a refined, powerful expression of one of the Northern Rhône’s most celebrated appellations. Produced by a pioneer of Côte Rôtie’s single-vineyard tradition, it combines rich Syrah character with the elegance, spice and structure that have made Guigal one of the region’s most respected names. The cuvée takes its name from Château d’Ampuis, the historic estate that has been at the heart of the domaine since its acquisition in 1995.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour with mauve reflections, this Côte Rôtie opens with expressive aromas of dark fruit, blackberries, plums and warm spices, complemented by subtle oak and vanilla. The palate is full-bodied and beautifully structured, balancing concentrated black fruit with firm, intense tannins and a refined, spicy finish. The 2016 vintage offers both power and freshness, giving the wine considerable aging potential. It can be enjoyed now after careful decanting, but will develop greater harmony and complexity over the next 10–20 years when properly stored.

Production
Château d’Ampuis is crafted from carefully selected parcels in Côte Rôtie, where steep, rocky slopes and mineral-rich soils provide ideal conditions for Syrah. Guigal works with low yields and a strong respect for the natural character of the vineyards. The harvested grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by an extended four-week maceration on the skins. The wine is then matured for 38 months in new French oak, creating an impressive depth of flavour while integrating the wine’s powerful tannic structure.

Food & Serving
Its generous structure and dark-fruited intensity make this wine an excellent match for game, venison, roast beef, lamb and other richly flavoured red meats. It also pairs beautifully with mature, hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and allow the aromas of fruit, spice and oak to fully unfold.

Producer
Founded in Ampuis in 1946 by Étienne Guigal, the domaine grew from his experience in the cellars of Vidal-Fleury. His son Marcel joined the family business in 1961, and the third generation, Philippe, remains closely involved in winemaking and production. E. Guigal has played a defining role in the modern revival of Côte Rôtie, particularly through its focus on distinguished vineyard sites such as La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. Alongside these celebrated ‘La La La’ wines, Château d’Ampuis is one of the domaine’s flagship cuvées and a benchmark for the appellation.
